Few unit-conversion problems cause as much daily confusion as fuel economy. A Canadian shopper comparing a Honda Civic on a US website (32 MPG city), a UK review (38 MPG combined), and the manufacturer's European spec sheet (7.4 L/100km) is looking at the same vehicle in three completely different units — and two of those MPG figures are not comparable to each other. A Japanese driver translating "15 kmpl" into something their American cousin will understand has yet another conversion to perform. Why the World Disagrees on Fuel Economy Units
Fuel economy units are a perfect snapshot of how engineering culture, taxation policy, and national measurement systems collide. The United States stuck with miles per gallon (MPG) because it stuck with the customary US gallon (3.785 L) — a unit that traces back to the British Queen Anne wine gallon of 1707. When the UK reformed its weights in 1824, the new Imperial gallon (4.546 L) was defined as the volume of 10 pounds of water at 62°F. The two English-speaking continents have measured fuel differently for two centuries.
Continental Europe never adopted the gallon. After the metric system was codified post-French Revolution, fuel had to be priced and measured in liters. But Europe also took a regulatory approach focused on consumption — fuel taxes have historically been 3-5x higher in Europe than in the US, so "how many liters does this car burn per 100 km of driving" was the policy-relevant question, not "how far can I go on one tankful." The result: L/100km, an inverse-of-MPG unit that makes fuel taxation, CO2 labelling, and EU emissions regulations (the famous "95 g CO2/km" fleet target) directly proportional.
Japan and India settled on km/L — metric like Europe, but conceptually like MPG (distance per fuel rather than fuel per distance). This is a reasonable choice for markets where small, efficient vehicles dominate and the relevant question is "how far on a tank." China officially uses L/100km in regulation but consumer media often quotes km/L. Australia uses L/100km because it adopted SI metrics in the 1970s, while South Africa uses both interchangeably.
Then EVs arrived and broke the entire framework. An electric vehicle doesn't burn fuel at all — it consumes kilowatt-hours. The EPA invented MPGe in 2010 to give consumers a familiar yardstick (33.7 kWh = 1 gallon of gasoline, by energy content), but Europe and most of the world simply quote kWh/100km. L/100km is Inverted vs MPG — Why Lower is Better
This is the single most important concept for anyone moving between unit systems. MPG and km/L are distance per fuel — bigger numbers mean a more efficient vehicle. L/100km and gal/100mi are fuel per distance — smaller numbers mean more efficient. A car that gets 5 L/100km is twice as efficient as one that gets 10 L/100km, but that's also the difference between roughly 47 MPG and 23.5 MPG (US).
The inverted unit isn't just academic preference. It has a real consumer-protection benefit: fuel-per-distance units are linear, so the savings from improving fuel economy are immediately visible. In MPG, going from 10 to 20 MPG saves the same amount of fuel as going from 30 to 60 MPG — but it doesn't feel that way because the second jump "looks bigger." In L/100km, going from 24 to 12 L/100km saves the same fuel as going from 8 to 4 L/100km, and the numbers actually show that. The EPA added gal/100mi to US fuel labels in 2013 specifically because consumers were making bad purchase decisions based on MPG alone.
MPG US vs MPG UK: Why the Same Number Means Different Things
The most common mistake when comparing American and British car reviews: assuming MPG means the same thing in both countries. It does not. The US gallon is 3.785 L; the UK Imperial gallon is 4.546 L — about 20% larger. A vehicle naturally travels 20% farther on an Imperial gallon than on a US gallon, even though it's burning the same liter-per-kilometer rate of fuel.
MPG (UK) = MPG (US) × 1.20095
MPG (US) = MPG (UK) ÷ 1.20095
Practical example: a Toyota Camry rated 32 MPG combined in the US is roughly 38.4 MPG in the UK. Both figures represent the same 7.35 L/100km. Always check which gallon a published MPG number is using — UK car magazines almost always use Imperial; US magazines almost always use US; international YouTubers are often inconsistent. MPGe Explained: How EVs Compare to Gas Cars
MPGe — Miles Per Gallon equivalent — is the EPA's attempt to put electric vehicles on a label that gasoline drivers can intuitively understand. The math relies on energy equivalence: one US gallon of gasoline contains about 33.7 kilowatt-hours of chemical energy (115,000 BTU). If an EV uses, say, 0.30 kWh per mile of driving, then 33.7 kWh would take it 33.7 ÷ 0.30 = 112 miles — hence 112 MPGe.
A Tesla Model 3 Standard Range typically achieves about 132 MPGe combined (24.6 kWh/100mi). A Lucid Air Pure can reach 142 MPGe. Most modern EVs land in the 100-130 MPGe range. Compared to the typical gasoline sedan at 32 MPG, EVs are roughly 3-4x more energy-efficient from battery to wheels — which is why their per-mile fueling cost is so much lower even accounting for higher electricity prices in some regions.
MPGe has limitations. It ignores upstream electricity generation (an EV charged on a coal grid still has emissions, just at the power plant), and it isn't directly comparable to gasoline cost-per-mile because gasoline and electricity have different prices per kWh. Real-World vs EPA / WLTP Numbers
Sticker fuel-economy figures come from standardized laboratory tests that don't match how anyone actually drives. The US EPA cycle, the European WLTP cycle, and the older NEDC test all under-estimate real-world consumption — typically by 10-25% for gasoline vehicles, and often 30-40% for EVs in cold weather. The reasons:

- • Air conditioning can add 0.5-1.5 L/100km in city driving.
- • Cargo and roof racks increase mass and drag. A loaded roof rack alone can cost 1-2 L/100km on the highway.
- • Tire pressure and tire type matter — underinflated tires can cost 0.5 L/100km; winter tires add 0.5-1 L/100km vs summer tires.
- • Ethanol-blended fuel (E10) reduces MPG by 3-4% vs pure gasoline.

When comparing vehicles across regions, prefer WLTP figures (current EU/UK standard) for the most realistic city-and-highway combined number. EPA combined is reasonably accurate. NEDC figures (still common in older Indian and Australian spec sheets) over-state real-world fuel economy by 25-35% and should be mentally discounted.
