What a serious controller test actually measures

Most online gamepad testers stop at “is the button pressed?” — useful for a five-second sanity check, useless for diagnosing why your aim drifts or your inputs drop. The signals that actually predict in-game behaviour are quantitative: the resting offset of a stick (drift), how round a full rotation traces (circularity), how small a deadzone you can run before noise leaks through, how fast and how steadily the controller reports state (polling), and whether a button registers exactly one clean event per press (bounce/chatter).

This tester reads those directly from the browser's Gamepad API and runs them through a verified analysis engine. Stick drift is the averaged resting position with a jitter-based stability score; a magnitude over ~6% is where most players start noticing unwanted movement. Circularity traces your outer-ring rotation and scores how close the radius stays constant — competition-grade sticks hold ~97%+. Polling is measured from state-change timing, with the caveat that browsers and display refresh cap what's observable, so treat it as a floor, not a ceiling.

The Competitive Audit folds these into genre-weighted readiness scores because the same controller can be great for a platformer and marginal for a twitch shooter: FPS leans on drift and circularity, fighting games on input reliability and polling, racing on gate accuracy. None of it is guesswork or AI — it's deterministic math you can reproduce, and nothing leaves your device.

Use it to decide whether a stick needs a deadzone tweak or a Hall-effect replacement, to validate a repair, to compare a new controller against an old one, or to generate a report for a warranty claim. Pair it with the other diagnostics in the suite below.

Finally a browser tester with real circularity and polling, not just a button light-up. I screen my team's controllers with this before tournaments — the drift magnitude and FPS readiness score caught two sticks that needed replacing. The exported report is genuinely useful.

I run this before and after every stick-drift repair and attach the JSON report to the ticket. The deadzone recommendation from collected samples is spot on, and customers trust a number more than 'it feels fine now'. No install on shop machines is a big plus.

The circularity trace told me exactly why my wheel-stick combo felt off in one direction. Polling reads a bit low on Bluetooth versus my native tool, but the docs explain why and wired is steady. Everything else is excellent.

The audit's genre weighting is smart — my controller scored high for platformers but only 'good' for FPS because of slight drift, which matched exactly what I felt. Reset the samples, retest, instant feedback. It's now part of my warm-up routine.
