Understanding Body Shapes
What is Body Shape?
Body shape refers to the natural proportions of your bust, waist, and hip measurements. Understanding your body shape helps you choose clothing styles that flatter your figure and boost your confidence.
The five main body shapes are Hourglass, Pear, Apple, Rectangle, and Inverted Triangle. Each shape has unique characteristics and looks best in different styles.
Waist-to-Hip Ratio
The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is calculated by dividing your waist measurement by your hip measurement. This ratio is used in health assessments and body shape classification.
A WHR below 0.80 for women or 0.95 for men is generally considered healthy. Higher ratios may indicate increased health risks and suggest the need for lifestyle changes.
How to Measure Correctly
- Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape parallel to the ground
- Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of your natural waistline, usually just above your belly button
- Hip: Measure around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks, typically 7-9 inches below your waist
- Tips: Stand naturally, don’t hold your breath or suck in, and use a flexible measuring tape

Frequently Asked Questions
Can my body shape change?
Yes, body shape can change due to weight fluctuations, pregnancy, aging, and fitness routines. However, your basic bone structure remains constant.
Is one body shape better than others?
No, all body shapes are beautiful and healthy. The goal is to understand your shape to make informed styling choices and maintain good health, not to change your natural body type.
How often should I measure?
If you’re tracking fitness progress, measure every 4-6 weeks. For general styling purposes, once or twice a year is sufficient unless you experience significant weight changes.
What if I'm between two shapes?
It’s common to have characteristics of multiple body shapes. Use the styling tips from both shapes to find what works best for you and makes you feel confident.
