Calculate bricks and mortar needed for walls with support for standard brick sizes
Recommended: 5-10% for experienced, 10-15% for DIY
Area = Length × Height
Example: 20 ft × 8 ft = 160 square feet
Bricks = Area × Bricks per Sq Ft
Modular: 7 per sq ft | Queen: 6 per sq ft | King: 4.5 per sq ft
Example: 160 × 7 = 1,120 bricks
Total = Base × (1 + Waste%/100)
Add 5-15% for breakage and cuts
Example: 1,120 × 1.10 = 1,232 bricks

Calculate wall area (length × height), then multiply by the number of bricks per square foot for your brick size. For modular bricks (the most common), use 7 bricks per square foot. A 10ft × 8ft wall needs: 80 sq ft × 7 = 560 bricks. Always add 5-10% for waste and breakage.
Modular (most common): 3-5/8" × 2-1/4" × 7-5/8" - about 7 bricks per sq ft. Queen: 3-1/8" × 2-3/4" × 7-5/8" - about 6 bricks per sq ft. King: 3-1/8" × 2-5/8" × 9-5/8" - about 4.5 bricks per sq ft. These measurements include mortar joint spacing of about 3/8".
Mortar typically fills about 20% of wall volume. For every 1,000 modular bricks, you need approximately 13-15 cubic feet of mortar. A standard 80lb bag of mortar mix yields about 0.6 cubic feet, so you would need about 22-25 bags per 1,000 bricks. This assumes 3/8" mortar joints.
Yes, always add 5-10% for waste. Bricks break during transport, cutting, and installation. For complex patterns or if you are inexperienced, use 10-15%. It is much cheaper to have extras than to delay the project ordering more bricks, especially since dye lots can vary between batches.
"This calculator has been a game-changer for my estimates. The waste factor feature is spot-on, and being able to switch between brick sizes is super convenient. I have recommended it to all my crew members!"
"Perfect for quick material estimates during the bidding process. The mortar calculation is especially helpful since I always forget the cubic feet to bags conversion. Saves me time on every masonry job."
"I used this for my backyard wall project and the estimate was incredibly accurate. Ordered exactly what I needed plus the recommended waste factor. No trips back to the store! Easy to use even for beginners."
