Building or replacing a deck requires accurate material calculations to avoid waste and extra trips to the lumber yard. Our Deck Board Calculator helps you determine exactly how many boards, linear feet, and fasteners you need for both straight and diagonal deck patterns.
A critical consideration is that nominal lumber sizes differ from actual dimensions. A 2x6 board is actually 1.5” × 5.5”, not 2” × 6”. This affects coverage calculations significantly. Our calculator uses actual dimensions to provide precise board counts and avoid costly overages or shortages.
2x6 boards (1.5” thick) are the most popular choice for decking, offering strength and durability with joists 16” on center. 5/4x6 boards (1” thick) are lighter and easier to work with but require joists 12” on center maximum. For composite decking, check manufacturer specifications as widths vary.
“Building my first deck and this calculator was a lifesaver! It told me exactly how many boards to buy and even calculated the screws I needed. Ordered everything in one trip and had just the right amount!”
“I use this for quick deck material estimates. The diagonal pattern calculation is spot-on - saves me time doing math on every job. The cost breakdown helps with client quotes too.”
“Replaced my old deck boards myself. This calculator helped me figure out exactly how many 12-footers to buy for my 16x14 deck. The waste factor was perfect - had just a few boards left over.”
