Complete Guide to Grass Seed Calculations
A lush, healthy lawn starts with proper seeding. Whether you’re establishing a new lawn or overseeding an existing one, using the correct amount of grass seed is crucial for success. Our Grass Seed Calculator helps you determine precise seeding rates for eight popular grass types, ensuring optimal coverage and germination while preventing waste and saving money.
How to Calculate Grass Seed
Grass seed calculations are based on seeding rates per 1,000 square feet, which vary by grass type and whether you’re seeding a new lawn or overseeding. The formula is:
Area (square feet) = Length × Width (or π × radius²)
Pounds Needed = (Area ÷ 1000) × Seeding Rate
Bags Needed = Pounds Needed ÷ Bag Weight
Seeding Rates by Grass Type
- • Kentucky Bluegrass: 2 lbs/1000 ft² new, 1 lb overseeding
- • Perennial Ryegrass: 6 lbs/1000 ft² new, 3 lbs overseeding
- • Tall Fescue: 8 lbs/1000 ft² new, 4 lbs overseeding
- • Fine Fescue: 4 lbs/1000 ft² new, 2 lbs overseeding
- • Bermuda Grass: 1.5 lbs/1000 ft² new, 0.75 lbs overseeding
- • Zoysia Grass: 2 lbs/1000 ft² new, 1 lb overseeding
Choosing the Right Grass Seed
Select grass seed based on your climate, sun exposure, and intended use:
- • Cool-Season Grasses: Kentucky Bluegrass, Ryegrass, Fescues (northern climates)
- • Warm-Season Grasses: Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede, Buffalo (southern climates)
- • Shade Tolerant: Fine Fescue, Tall Fescue (shady areas)
- • High Traffic: Perennial Ryegrass, Tall Fescue (sports fields, play areas)
- • Low Maintenance: Buffalo Grass, Fine Fescue (minimal care needed)
Seeding Success Tips
- • Prepare soil properly by tilling, leveling, and removing debris
- • Apply starter fertilizer before seeding for better establishment
- • Seed at the right time: fall for cool-season, late spring for warm-season
- • Keep soil consistently moist for 2-3 weeks after seeding
- • Don’t mow until grass reaches 3-4 inches height
- • Purchase 10-20% extra seed for uneven coverage and touch-ups
