Calculate roofing squares, shingle bundles, underlayment, and material costs based on roof pitch
Percentage shows additional area due to pitch
For hip roofs or multiple ridges, enter total ridge length
Simple roofs: 5-10%, Complex roofs: 15-20%
Typical range: $75-$200 per square depending on shingle quality
Roof pitch is expressed as rise over run (e.g., 6/12 means 6 inches of rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run). Steeper pitches require more material because the actual roof surface area is greater than the horizontal area.
Actual Area = Base Area × Pitch Factor × (1 + Waste%)
Example: 40 ft × 30 ft roof with 6/12 pitch and 10% waste:
= 1,200 sq ft × 1.118 × 1.10 = 1,476 sq ft = 14.76 squares

A roofing square is a unit of measurement equal to 100 square feet of roof area. It's the standard unit used in the roofing industry. For example, if your roof is 2,400 square feet, that equals 24 squares (2,400 ÷ 100 = 24).
Roof pitch significantly impacts the amount of material needed. A steeper pitch means more surface area to cover. For example, a 4/12 pitch adds about 5% more area, while a 12/12 pitch (45-degree angle) adds about 41% more area. This is called the pitch factor or slope multiplier.
Typically, 3 bundles of standard three-tab shingles equal 1 square (100 sq ft). However, architectural or dimensional shingles may require 4 bundles per square. Always check the manufacturer's specifications, as coverage can vary by shingle type and brand.
Add 5-10% for simple roofs with few valleys or hips. For complex roofs with multiple valleys, dormers, or irregular shapes, add 15-20% waste. The pitch also affects waste: steeper roofs (10/12 or higher) typically need more waste allowance due to cutting and fitting challenges.
"This calculator is spot-on for estimating materials. The pitch factor calculations match our industry standards perfectly. I use it for every quote now, and it saves me at least 30 minutes per job. The waste percentage options are really helpful."
"Reroofing my garage was intimidating, but this calculator made material planning simple. It told me exactly how many bundles to buy, and I only had 2 bundles left over. The ridge cap calculation was particularly helpful since I almost forgot about that!"
"We use this for preliminary estimates before detailed takeoffs. The ability to adjust for different pitches and waste factors makes it very versatile. Accurate and saves time on quick calculations."
