A short history of length

Length is the oldest measured quantity, and almost every early civilisation defined it from the human body. The Egyptian royal cubit, standardised around 2700 BCE, was the distance from the pharaoh's elbow to the tip of his middle finger plus the width of his palm: about 524 millimetres. Wooden cubit rods, calibrated against a master granite cubit kept at the royal palace, were issued to construction foremen and inspected monthly. The pyramids of Giza are dimensioned in cubits with errors of less than one part in ten thousand, a precision that still impresses surveyors three and a half millennia later. Greek and Roman engineers carried the foot (pous, pes) and the pace forward, with the Roman mile defined as one thousand paces (mille passus) of approximately 1480 metres.

Medieval Europe inherited a patchwork. By the year 1000 every market town had its own ell, foot, and yard, and traders carried small portable rulers to verify cloth and rope. England's Edward I issued the 1305 Statute for Measuring of Land that fixed the rod at 16.5 feet, the chain at 66 feet (4 rods), and the furlong at 660 feet (10 chains). Ten square chains made one acre, which is why the chain still shows up in US Public Land Survey System plat descriptions written in the 1830s. The international yard, the modern legal anchor of every English foot, inch, and mile in use today, was not fixed until the International Yard and Pound Agreement of 1 July 1959, when six English-speaking countries declared the yard to be exactly 0.9144 metres. The agreement ended a century of two-parts-per-million discrepancies between national yard prototypes.

The metre is a child of the French Revolution. In 1791 the French Academy of Sciences proposed defining a new universal unit as one ten-millionth of the distance from the North Pole to the equator measured along the meridian passing through Paris. Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Delambre and Pierre Mechain were dispatched to triangulate the arc from Dunkerque to Barcelona; their seven-year expedition, conducted partly during the Reign of Terror and the Napoleonic Wars, produced a metre roughly 0.2 millimetres shorter than the modern value. A platinum bar embodying their result was deposited in the French Archives in 1799 and became the first metre prototype. The kilogram was defined in parallel as the mass of one cubic decimetre of water at four degrees Celsius, locking length, area, volume, and mass into a single coherent table.

The metre's definition has been revised five times since. The 1889 General Conference on Weights and Measures replaced the Archives bar with a more durable platinum-iridium prototype kept at Sevres outside Paris. The 1960 conference shifted to a wavelength definition: 1,650,763.73 wavelengths of the orange-red emission of krypton-86, which any well-equipped national lab could reproduce without comparing against a physical artefact. In 1983 the definition pivoted again, this time to the speed of light: the metre is the distance light travels in vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second. The 2019 redefinition tidied the system by fixing all seven SI base units to defining physical constants. The metre is now the most precisely realised length unit in human history, accurate to roughly one part in ten to the seventeenth.

Maritime navigation kept its own unit. The nautical mile originated as one minute of arc along a great circle of the Earth, which would make it exactly 1852.216 metres on a perfect sphere; because Earth is slightly oblate the actual minute of arc varies between 1842.9 m at the equator and 1861.6 m at the poles. The International Hydrographic Organisation resolved the ambiguity in 1929 by fixing the international nautical mile at exactly 1852 metres. The US Coast and Geodetic Survey adopted the same value in 1954, and every maritime and aviation chart published since then uses it. The related knot is one nautical mile per hour, the standard speed unit in both air and sea navigation worldwide.

The astronomical units bring the chain to its longest links. The astronomical unit (au), defined since 2012 as exactly 149,597,870,700 metres, anchors the scale of the inner solar system. The light-year, used in popular astronomy, is the distance light travels in vacuum in one Julian year: about 9.46 trillion kilometres. The parsec, preferred by professional astronomers, falls geometrically out of parallax measurements: the distance at which one au subtends an arc of one second, numerically 3.262 light-years. Galactic distances are reported in kiloparsecs and megaparsecs, and cosmological distances in gigaparsecs. The current scale of the observable universe, roughly 93 billion light-years across, would require approximately twenty-eight gigaparsecs to express in astronomers' native unit.

The last meaningful housekeeping happened in our own decade. On 1 January 2023 the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Geodetic Survey jointly deprecated the US Survey foot, a unit defined in 1893 as exactly 1200/3937 metres. The survey foot was about two parts per million longer than the international foot (0.3048 m exact); over the contiguous United States the discrepancy accumulated to about 3.2 metres east-to-west. State plane coordinate systems published after 2022 use only the international foot, ending a century of quiet ambiguity. Older deeds and pre-2023 GIS datasets still encode the survey foot, so any modern boundary calculation has to flag which foot is in use before the arithmetic starts. This calculator uses only the international foot; if you are working from a pre-2023 cadastral source, convert it explicitly before dragging.
