(1)A Short History of Unit Conversion
The need to convert between units of measurement is almost as old as measurement itself. Mesopotamian merchants in 3000 BCE used at least four different cubit lengths depending on which city-state they were trading with, and clay-tablet receipts from Ur show explicit conversion factors written into the contract. The Code of Hammurabi (c. 1754 BCE) standardized weights and measures across Babylon precisely so that tax-collection and grain-trading would not be subject to the whims of local custom. In practice, traveling traders carried small brass conversion sticks - the world's first portable unit converters.
The Greco-Roman world inherited Egyptian, Mesopotamian, and Phoenician systems simultaneously, and Roman jurists eventually decreed that one Roman pound (libra) was divided into twelve unciae (ounces), giving us both the 'lb' abbreviation and the words ounce and inch. Charlemagne tried to standardize these across his empire in the year 789 CE, with limited success. Medieval Europe ended up with a chaotic patchwork: a French toise was different from an English yard, a German pfund different from a Dutch pond, and a single river-crossing could change the conversion factor for the same merchandise. The cost of all this friction was huge.
The metric system, born in revolutionary France in the 1790s, was the first deliberate attempt to design a universal coherent system from scratch. The meter was defined as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the north pole; the kilogram was the mass of a liter of water at maximum density. By 1875 the Treaty of the Meter (Convention du Metre) had been signed by 17 nations, and the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) outside Paris took charge of the global standards. The platinum-iridium International Prototype Kilogram lived in a vault in Sevres until 2019, when the kilogram was finally redefined in terms of Planck's constant - an immaterial, immutable standard.
Despite the metric system's technical superiority, three holdouts remain committed to legacy units in everyday civilian use: the United States, Liberia, and Myanmar. (The UK uses an awkward hybrid: metric in supermarkets and science, but imperial for road signs and pints.) This is why conversion tools remain a thriving category on the internet 230 years after Lavoisier and his colleagues invented the metric system. A US engineer building parts in inches still has to convert to millimeters for a Chinese fabricator; a British baker following a US recipe has to convert cups of flour to grams; a German tourist driving across America has to convert miles per gallon to liters per 100 kilometers.
The first digital unit converters appeared on minicomputers in the 1960s as small programs in BASIC or FORTRAN. The HP-35, the world's first scientific pocket calculator (1972), included built-in conversions for inches, feet, miles, gallons, pounds, and Fahrenheit. By the 1980s, dedicated 'unit converter' apps were standard on early personal computers - WordStar shipped with one - and by the 2000s they had migrated to the web. Google added inline conversion to its search bar in 2005, which made every search query a potential conversion query.
The challenge of modern conversion tools is not the math - SI factors have been fixed for decades - but the user interface. Generic 'value / from / to' forms work for simple linear conversions but fail catastrophically for domain problems. Converting cups of flour to grams requires knowing flour density and packing method. Converting between fuel economy units (MPG, L/100km, km/L) is non-linear and benefits from a visual chart showing the relationship. Converting angles between MOA and MRAD makes more sense on a protractor dial than in two text boxes. The state of the art in 2026 is domain-immersive widgets: each unit category gets a UI that looks and behaves like the thing being measured.
