The 60-Second Minute: A History of Sexagesimal Timekeeping

The 60-second minute and 60-minute hour are not arbitrary — they are direct descendants of Babylonian base-60 arithmetic, developed around 2000 BC. The Babylonians chose 60 because it has many divisors (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, 60), making fractions tractable in an era without decimals. Greek astronomers Hipparchus (~150 BC) and Ptolemy (~150 AD) adopted base-60 for celestial calculations, subdividing degrees of arc and units of time using partes minutae primae and partes minutae secundae — literally "first small parts" and "second small parts".

Mechanical clocks built in medieval European monasteries (~1300 AD) initially used variable hours matching daylight, but the invention of the verge-and-foliot escapement enabled fixed-hour timekeeping. Christiaan Huygens's pendulum clock (1656) brought minute-precision affordable. The seconds hand appeared on mechanical clocks in the 1670s after the balance spring. By 1800 the modern second was universal in scientific work, though everyday timekeeping in much of the world remained loose to within an hour until railroads and telegraphs demanded synchronization in the 19th century.

The 1884 International Meridian Conference in Washington DC standardized 24 time zones based on Greenwich Mean Time, the first global time-coordination system. Atomic clocks arrived in 1955 (NPL caesium clock), and the 1967 SI redefinition fixed the second as 9,192,631,770 oscillations of cesium-133 hyperfine transition radiation. This decoupled timekeeping from the irregular Earth rotation. The Earth has been slowing (~2.3 ms per century due to tidal friction), so leap seconds are inserted to UTC; 27 have been added since 1972.

Modern athletic and broadcast timing pushes the second down to sub-millisecond precision. FINA (swimming) records to 1/100 s. World Athletics records to 1/1000 s for track. Formula 1 reports to 1/1000 s. Photo-finish cameras run at 10,000 fps (0.1 ms resolution). At the ultra-fast end, Nobel Prize 1999 attoclock work resolved chemical reactions at the 10⁻¹⁸ s (attosecond) timescale — a billionth of a billionth of a second, the time light takes to cross a single hydrogen atom.

For everyday human use, the 60-second minute remains the most cognitively comfortable unit. Pomodoro technique (1980s Francesco Cirillo) chose 25-minute work blocks because they feel substantial but not exhausting. Music tempos (60-200 BPM) sit in a comfortable beat range. NBA basketball quarters (720 s), soccer halves (2700 s), NHL hockey periods (1200 s) — all multiples of 60 seconds because that's what humans naturally think in.

The decimal-time experiment of revolutionary France (1793-1795) tried to impose 10-hour days, 100-decimal-minute hours, 100-decimal-second minutes. It failed spectacularly within 18 months. Customer resistance was overwhelming, clockmaker inventories were locked in 60-base mechanisms, and the mathematical advantages of decimal time couldn't overcome the cultural inertia of three millennia of sexagesimal habit. Even today, despite metric everything else, time stubbornly remains base-60.
