Bearded Dragon Tank Size Calculator
A bearded dragon needs a tank that grows with it: 20 gallons at hatch, 40 gallons by juvenile, 75 gallons sub-adult, and a hard minimum of 4 ft x 2 ft x 2 ft (120 gallons) for life. Pick a stage and watch the enclosure scale to the right inches, gallons, basking placement, and material trade-offs.

The math
Gallons (US) = L_in x W_in x H_in / 231Worked: a 48 x 24 x 24 enclosure has 48 x 24 x 24 = 27,648 cubic inches. Divide by 231 cubic inches per US gallon to get 119.7 — rounded up, the textbook “120 gallon” minimum for an adult Pogona vitticeps.
Litres = Gallons (US) x 3.785120 US gallons x 3.785 = 454 L. Useful when buying enclosures sold under metric specs in the EU and UK.

How to size a bearded dragon tank in 5 steps
- Pick the stage. Hatchling 0-2 months, juvenile 2-6, sub-adult 6-12, adult 12+.
- Read the minimum. The widget shows L x W x H in inches and centimetres for that stage.
- Choose a material. PVC if you have a cold room or want lower running cost, glass if budget is tight, melamine if you DIY.
- Plan the basking spot. Place the branch at the warm end so the body sits 8-12 inches below the dome bulb.
- Schedule upgrades. Log this upgrade and set a calendar reminder for the next stage in your phone.
Why bearded dragon tank size keeps growing — the husbandry history
In 1926 Otto Ahl described Amphibolurus vitticeps from central Australian specimens. The species was reclassified into Pogona by Storr in 1982, and the central bearded dragon entered the European and US pet trade in the late 1980s after Australia banned wild exports. Early keepers housed adults in 20 gallon long aquariums because that was what the rosy boa and king snake hobby was using.
The first inflection came in the late 1990s when the Reptile Veterinarians of Australia and the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV) began publishing chronic metabolic bone disease case studies tying small enclosures, poor UVB index, and basking distance back to husbandry. Industry-standard minimums climbed from 20 gallons to 40, then 75 gallons by the mid 2000s.
The current 4 ft by 2 ft by 2 ft (120 gallon equivalent) minimum emerged from the breeder community first — Bob Mailloux at Sandfire Ranch, the Repashy nutrition team, and influential UK keepers like John Courteney-Smith — and is now repeated by every major reptile-vet society. Ferguson Zone 3 UVB requirements mean dragons need a horizontal basking gradient, which only a 48 inch footprint can really deliver.
PVC panel construction overtook glass in serious hobby circles around 2015 thanks to Dubia Rangers, Animal Plastics, and Zen Habitats. PVC retains heat, reduces side-glass reflection stress, and keeps electricity bills down — three reasons the calculator above flags it as the long-term winner even with a higher upfront sticker.
What hasn't changed is that Pogona vitticeps is a semi-arboreal, flatland, sit-and-wait predator from desert and scrub habitat between Lake Eyre and the Great Dividing Range. Horizontal floor space matters more than height. Dragons forage along ground hot spots and bask on raised wood. That biology is why the “4 by 2 by 2 minimum” — wide and long, not tall — is the right shape and why this calculator scales the L axis far faster than the H axis as the dragon ages.
What reptile keepers say
“I send every new bearded dragon owner to this calculator before they leave my clinic. The growing SVG makes the upgrade timeline impossible to misread, and the glass-vs-PVC trade-off is the most honest one I have seen online.”
“I run 22 enclosures and use this as a buyer education tool. The basking placement guide cut my return-customer questions by half.”
“Finally a tool that says PVC out loud. The notes on 4 by 2 by 2 being the lifelong minimum match what the herp community has been preaching for a decade.”
“Bought a 20 gallon long because the pet shop said it was fine. This calculator showed me exactly when to upgrade and saved my dragon Goro from a year of stunting. The growing diagram is genius.”
