Dog Whelping & Pregnancy Calculator
Plot your dog's pregnancy from breeding day to whelp. The standard 63-day gestation is mapped onto a trimester timeline with the 14 critical milestones every breeder needs — vet palpation, ultrasound, X-ray litter count, temperature drop, and whelping prep — per AKC breeder education and WSAVA reproduction guidelines.

due_date = mating_date + gestation_days (default 63)window = due_date ± 3 days (toy breeds ± 2; giant breeds ± 4)Worked: Labrador bred March 1, 2026 → due May 3, 2026 (63 days). Earliest April 30, latest May 6.
How to Use the Calculator
- 1Pick the breedMost dogs run a 63-day gestation. Toy breeds (Yorkie, Chihuahua) trend 61-62 days; giant breeds (Great Dane) trend full 63.
- 2Enter breeding dateUse the first successful breeding date as anchor. If you have a confirmed LH surge date from your vet, count from that instead.
- 3Read the trimester timelineThe orange-teal-rose bands show the three 21-day trimesters. The pointer marks today on the gestation timeline.
- 4Hit the milestones14 critical milestones map onto the timeline — vet palpation D28-32, ultrasound D28-35, X-ray D49-55, pre-whelp temp drop D58-60.
- 5Plan whelp + emergency triggersDue date is day 63 ± 3. If no labor by day 65 or you see green discharge before labor, call your vet immediately.
A short history of canine reproduction science
In 2026, a first-time Labrador breeder in Vermont confirms her dam's pregnancy at day 30 via ultrasound. The vet hands her a printed milestone schedule — and she wonders why a printout still exists in an age of smartphones. This calculator was built to replace that printout with an interactive timeline that any breeder can pull up on a phone in the whelping room.
Modern understanding of canine reproduction traces to the 19th-century veterinary anatomy work of Pierre Flourens at the École vétérinaire d'Alfort (Paris, 1830s), who first described the 63-day average canine gestation. Until then, breeders relied on hand-me-down folk wisdom — "dog days" tied to lunar cycles rather than ovulation biology.
The American Kennel Club, founded 1884, has published breed standards and litter registration rules continuously since 1884. The AKC's Breeder Education program codifies whelping protocols, neonatal care, and registration requirements (litters must be registered within 6 months of birth). AKC standards now cover 200+ recognized breeds with breed-specific gestation and litter-size norms.
Veterinary reproduction emerged as a distinct specialty (theriogenology) with the American College of Theriogenologists chartered in 1971. Theriogenologists pioneered progesterone-based ovulation timing — measuring the LH surge to predict ovulation within 24 hours — which tightened gestation accuracy from the rough 63 ± 5 days (from breeding) to 63 ± 1 days (from LH surge). The progesterone test is now standard of care for valuable pregnancies.
Ultrasound for canine pregnancy entered general practice in the 1980s following advances in portable units. Day 28-35 ultrasound confirms pregnancy and detects fetal heartbeats. Day 49+ radiography (X-ray) reveals fetal skeletons and lets a vet count puppies — critical for knowing when whelping is complete and whether a retained pup requires emergency intervention.
WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association), founded 1959, publishes the global reproduction guidelines used in this calculator. WSAVA documents define the trimester divisions, milestone timing, nutritional requirements (25-50% calorie increase in trimester 3 per AAFCO guidelines), and whelping-environment standards (75-78°F ambient, 85-90°F box heat).
Brachycephalic breeds — French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers — present a special case. Their narrow pelvises and large-headed pups produce dystocia rates above 80% in some lines, requiring planned C-sections at day 59-61. The 2018 BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Reproduction recommends elective C-section for any brachycephalic breed unless an ultrasound and clear birth canal confirm vaginal whelp viability. Our companion dog pregnancy calculator and dog weight calculator support breeders through whelp and beyond.
Whelping Pro Tips & Emergency Signals
Rectal temperature drops below 99°F 12-24 hours before active labor. The drop is the single most reliable whelp predictor; calendar alone gives a 6-day window.
Dam needs time to acclimate to the whelping box. Place in quiet, draft-free room at 75-78°F. Pig rails 4" off the floor prevent crushing pups.
Late-term iron supplementation can predispose to retained placenta. Stick with the dam's normal balanced diet (with calorie increase per WSAVA) until weaning.
Past day 65 with no labor, dystocia is very likely. Emergency vet consult — uterine inertia or retained pup risks dam life.
Greenish discharge before any pup means placental separation. Wait, and the dam loses pups and possibly her own life. Call emergency vet immediately.
Don't skip this — knowing the count tells you when whelping is complete. Retained pups cause toxemia within 24-48 hours of whelp.
What does the due date actually mean?
A "due date" of day 63 is the median of a normal distribution centered at the LH-surge date — the day when ovulation occurred. Counting from breeding adds 2-7 days of uncertainty because sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract that long before fertilizing. The ±3-day window reflects this biological variability, not a calendar approximation.
For toy and small breeds, the window narrows to ±2 days (typically 61-63 days). For giant breeds and large litters, the window widens to ±4 days (typically 60-66 days). Brachycephalic breeds — French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Pugs — should be on the surgical schedule for day 59-61 elective C-section per BSAVA reproduction guidelines, regardless of the natural due date.
The actionable signal is not the calendar date but the pre-whelp temperature drop. Twelve to 24 hours before active labor, the dam's rectal temperature falls from a normal 100.5-102°F to below 99°F. Twice-daily temperature monitoring starting at day 58 catches this drop with high reliability. The temperature signal beats the calendar by several hours.
Whelping prep: breed-by-breed comparison
| Breed group | Gestation | C-section rate | Whelp prep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toy (Yorkie, Chihuahua) | 61-62 d | 40-60% | Plan vet attendance + glucose monitoring |
| Small (Beagle, Cocker) | 62-63 d | 10-15% | Standard whelping box, vet on call |
| Medium (Lab, Cocker) | 63 d | 8-12% | Standard prep; predictable |
| Large (GSD, Rottie) | 63-64 d | 10-15% | Large whelping box, calcium monitoring late-term |
| Giant (Great Dane) | 63-65 d | 15-20% | Oversized whelp area; vet on standby |
| Brachycephalic (Frenchie) | 61-63 d | 80%+ | Elective C-section day 59-61 |
Vet & Breeder Reviews
“I attend 60+ canine whelps a year. The trimester timeline in this calculator matches WSAVA reproduction guidelines and AKC breeder education materials. I send it to my clients pre-breeding so they prep correctly.”
“Twelve litters of Golden Retrievers over six years and I've used this calculator since the day it launched. The day-49 X-ray reminder caught a single retained puppy in 2025 — would have lost the dam without it.”
“Frenchies almost always C-section. The day-58 temperature monitoring reminder and the day-60 pre-whelp prep are exactly the schedule my repro vet runs. The breed presets including Frenchie are surprisingly accurate.”
“I run a 30-dog kennel and bred 8 litters in 2025. The history panel lets me check past due dates against actual whelp dates — my running stats show 62.7-day average from confirmed LH surge. Calculator is dead accurate for working Labs.”
