Rabbit Hutch Size Calculator
The Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund minimum is a hutch of 12 sq ft (6 × 2 ft, three hops long and two hops wide) plus an attached exercise run of 32 sq ft (8 × 4 ft) with 24/7 access. This calculator scales those minimums by breed body length, single vs pair vs trio, and indoor vs outdoor housing across 15 ARBA-recognised breeds.
Configure your hutch
Body length 11", free hop 14", standing height 15".
RWAF strongly recommends bonded pairs over solos — see Rabbit Welfare Policy 2014.

Dwarf breeds lose body heat fast. Insulate the outdoor hutch to R-10 or move it to a garage under 5 °C.
Bonded pairs need roughly 1.5× the single-rabbit floor area, not 2× — they nap together. Vertical interest (platforms, ramps) matters more than raw footprint.

RWAF dimensional formula
hutch_length = max(3 × hop_length, 72 in) · hutch_width = max(2 × hop_length, 24 in)hutch_height = max(standing_height + 4 in, 24 in) · run = 8 × 4 ft (96 × 48 in)Worked: Holland Lop, hop 14", standing 15" → 42 × 28 × 19 in scaled to RWAF floor → 72 × 28 × 24 in = 14 sq ft hutch + 32 sq ft run = 46 sq ft total. Comfortably above RWAF's 44 sq ft minimum.

How to size a rabbit hutch in 5 steps
- 1. Pick the breed. Body length and free-hop distance set the floor — a Netherland Dwarf hops 12", a Continental Giant hops 34".
- 2. Lay out three hops in a line. That is the hutch length minimum. Two hops set the width. Standing height + 4" sets the ceiling.
- 3. Attach an exercise run of at least 8 × 4 ft. Per RWAF policy the run must be accessible 24/7 — a locked overnight hutch fails welfare standards.
- 4. Scale for bonded pairs (×1.5) or trios (×2). Floor area is sub-linear because rabbits nap together but exercise solo.
- 5. Audit against RWAF 12+32 and HRS 8+24-per-rabbit. A US household with two giants needs a converted shed, not any retail hutch.
Why rabbit hutch standards exist
In 2026 a UK rabbit owner shopping for an outdoor hutch on Amazon will see SKUs labelled "XL rabbit hutch" that measure 48 × 24 × 36 in — 8 sq ft of floor, well below the Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund (RWAF) minimum of 12 sq ft. RWAF's "A Hutch is Not Enough" campaign, launched in 2011, exists precisely because the legal-minimum cage in pet retail has never tracked the welfare-minimum cage in veterinary medicine.
The 6 × 2 × 2 ft RWAF rule comes from observing rabbits in the wild. The European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) travels 1.5 to 2 km per night between feeding sites; a domestic descendant retains the same hopping gait and the same need to fully extend its body in a stretch. A hutch that prevents three consecutive hops in a straight line produces the same stereotypies — bar-biting, fur-plucking, hutch-corner pacing — that the UK Animal Welfare Act 2006 was passed to prevent.
The House Rabbit Society (HRS), founded by Marinell Harriman in California in 1988, codified the per-rabbit metric: 8 sq ft of resting area plus 24 sq ft of exercise per rabbit. HRS guidance is stricter than RWAF for multi-rabbit households because the US movement formed around indoor free-roam rabbits rather than the UK's outdoor-hutch tradition.
Giant breeds — Flemish Giant (recognised by ARBA in 1916, weight 13-19 lb), Continental Giant (BRC standard, up to 25 lb), French Lop (10-14 lb) — fall outside every commercial rabbit hutch sold in pet retail. Their welfare housing is structurally a converted garden shed or a walk-in aviary with 4×8 ft floor minimum. The American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) Standard of Perfection 2024 lists 49 recognised breeds, of which 6 cannot be ethically housed in any pre-built consumer cage.
Vertical space matters as much as floor space. The RSPCA and PDSA (the UK's largest veterinary charity) jointly recommend the rabbit be able to stand fully upright with ears extended without touching the ceiling. For a Mini Lop that means roughly 18 in of clearance — for a Flemish Giant standing on hind legs that means 30 in. Most three-tier "rabbit condos" sold online crush ceiling height below 14 in and so fail welfare standards even when their floor area is adequate.
Bonded pairs are now considered the welfare gold standard. RWAF policy since 2014 holds that solo housing causes measurable depression in rabbits — appetite changes, reduced grooming, withdrawal — and recommends adopting in bonded pairs from rescues such as Rabbit Residence Sanctuary or the SPCA. The floor-area requirement for two rabbits is approximately 1.5× a single, not 2×, because bonded pairs sleep stacked.
What Users Say
“I now point clients to this calculator before they buy a hutch. The three-hop visualizer makes the welfare standard intuitive — most owners under-buy by 60% because the pet-store labelling is misleading.”
“We require adopters to demonstrate they meet RWAF minimums. The breed-specific outputs from this tool match our home-check rubric exactly, including the 1.5× scaling for bonded pairs.”
“Finally a calculator that distinguishes RWAF UK rules from HRS US rules — most online guides muddle the two. The compliance check column is exactly what we needed for adoption applications.”
“The 15-breed table and the giant-breed warning that no commercial hutch is adequate — that is the kind of honest sourcing readers thank us for. We feature this calculator in our annual housing buyers guide.”
