12 species sizing

Snake Enclosure Calculator

Snake enclosure sizing is not one rule for all snakes. Arboreal species like Green Tree Pythons need tall, narrow vivaria with branches. Terrestrial Corn, King, and Milk snakes need wide, shallow setups. Semi-aquatic Garter snakes need a large water feature. This calculator covers 12 species with shape-correct dimensions and full husbandry targets, per current Reptile Magazine and ARAV guidelines.

The sizing rule

Terrestrial: L (in) = max(24, body_length_in x 1.0); H = body_length_in x 0.4

Worked: a 4 ft corn snake (48 in) needs 48 in length and 19 in height. The accepted minimum rounds up to a 48 x 24 x 24 in (4 x 2 x 2 ft) PVC panel.

Arboreal: H (in) = max(36, body_length_in x 1.0); L = body_length_in x 0.5-0.7

Worked: a 6 ft Green Tree Python (72 in) needs 72 in vertical height and 36 in length. The standard is a 36 x 24 x 48 in (3 x 2 x 4 ft) arboreal PVC.

How to size a snake enclosure in 5 steps

  1. Pick species. The 12-species panel toggles the SVG shape — tall for arboreal, wide for terrestrial, mixed for semi-aquatic.
  2. Enter adult length. Use the female end of the range for unknown sex — females are larger in most species except Boa Constrictor.
  3. Calculate. The widget renders an inches-correct enclosure with hides, branches, water, or basking dome appropriate to the species.
  4. Read husbandry targets. Ambient F, basking F, and humidity percent are species-specific — never one-size-fits-all.
  5. Choose materials. PVC panel for snakes above 5 ft, glass aquariums acceptable for hatchlings and small terrestrial species.

From shoebox to vivarium — why snake enclosure rules keep evolving

In 2026, a new keeper bringing home a juvenile Green Tree Python finds the pet store sells 20 gallon long tanks but the species needs a tall, wet, branch-heavy vivarium. That mismatch is the core problem this calculator solves: snake enclosures are not interchangeable, and species ecology dictates shape.

The hobby long lived under the “snakes only need to stretch out in a third of body length” rule, popularized in 1980s ball python rack systems by Bob Clark and later other large-volume breeders. By the 2010s evidence from herpetological behavior studies (Warwick et al., 2013) showed snakes use 100 percent of horizontal space when given it. Reptile Magazine, the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV), and the British Federation of Herpetologists pushed for the “length plus width should equal body length” minimum.

Arboreal species turned the rule on its side. Green Tree Pythons (Morelia viridis), Emerald Tree Boas (Corallus caninus), and Carpet Pythons (Morelia spilota) coil on branches the whole day and only descend to drink and defecate. Their enclosure height matters more than floor area, and humidity targets above 70 percent for the Asian/African species require sealed PVC panel construction. See our humidity calculator for the misting schedule side.

Semi-aquatic Garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis) need a large water feature for soaking and hunting fish, but also a land basking area at 85 to 88 F. A pure aquarium drowns them; a pure terrestrial setup denies the soak. The Garter shape in the calculator above splits the floor 45/55 water-to-land with a basking rock.

Terrestrial colubrids — Corn (Pantherophis guttatus), King (Lampropeltis californiae), Milk (Lampropeltis triangulum), Hognose (Heterodon nasicus) — are the largest hobby segment and the easiest to under-house. A 20 gallon long has been the historical “adult corn snake” tank for 40 years; the modern minimum is 4 by 2 by 2 ft (48 x 24 x 24 in). The shape difference is not just numeric, it is behavioral — corn snakes climb opportunistically and use vertical space if you give it.

Boa Constrictors (Boa constrictor) and large pythons sit at the size extreme. An adult female Boa at 8 to 10 ft needs an 8 by 4 by 4 ft enclosure, ideally PVC panel with reinforced doors and 1 inch wall thickness. Wood melamine works if every seam is silicone-sealed because boa urates corrode untreated wood within months.

Burrowers — Sand Boas, Rosy Boas, Western Hognose — flip the height rule again. They spend 90 percent of life under substrate and benefit from 4 to 6 inches of fine aspen, play sand, or coco husk. Floor area matters; height can be as low as 12 inches because the snake never climbs.

Materials evolved alongside sizing rules. Glass aquariums (Aqueon, All Glass) defined the 1980s and 1990s; melamine vivaria (Vision Cages, Boaphile) dominated the 2000s; PVC panel (Animal Plastics, Zen Habitats, Dubia Rangers) became the modern standard from 2015 onward thanks to heat retention, light weight, and waterproof seams. The calculator above gives shape-correct dimensions assuming PVC panel — adjust gallons up roughly 30 percent if using a glass aquarium for the same heat-retention target.

The shape-by-species distinction is exactly what new owners miss. Watching the enclosure flip from wide to tall when you toggle to a Green Tree Python is the best teaching moment I have seen in a calculator.

We get surrendered boas in undersized 4 ft tanks every month. This calculator gives me the exact 8x4x4 number to put in the surrender education email.

Finally a tool that calls out semi-aquatic garter snake needs separately from desert sand boas. The shape filter is the right abstraction.
