Day-Of-Year Formula
DOY = sum(days_in_each_prior_month) + day_in_monthISO_week = ceil((DOY + jan1_dow_offset) / 7)Worked: May 27, 2026 → DOY = 31+28+31+30+27 = 147. With jan1_dow_offset = 3 (Thu = 4, Mon-start adj = 3), ISO_week = ceil((147 + 3) / 7) = ceil(21.43) = 22.

A Brief History of the Calendar
The Gregorian calendar — the system this 2026 grid uses — was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in October 1582 to correct a 10-day drift that had accumulated in the Julian calendar (instituted by Julius Caesar in 46 BCE). The Julian year of 365.25 days was 0.0078 days too long, which compounded over 16 centuries to throw Easter dates out of sync with the spring equinox. Gregory's fix: every century year (1700, 1800, 1900) is NOT a leap year UNLESS it is divisible by 400 (so 2000 was).
By that rule, 2026 is not a leap year (not divisible by 4). It has exactly 365 days, with January 1 falling on a Thursday. The next leap year is 2028. This determinism makes weekday calculation purely arithmetical — Zeller's congruence (Christian Zeller, 1882) and the Doomsday algorithm (John Conway, 1973) can map any date to its weekday with no lookup table.
ISO 8601, ratified in 1988, gave the world the canonical YYYY-MM-DD date format and the Monday-start ISO week numbering used in this calendar. ISO week 1 is the week containing the first Thursday of the year; some years (like 2026) have 53 ISO weeks instead of 52. The system originated with Swedish railway timetables, where unambiguous week numbers were essential for crew scheduling. Today every German tax form, every Japanese business spreadsheet, and the entire SAP ERP system use ISO weeks.
US federal holidays are codified in 5 U.S.C. 6103. The 11 listed for 2026 reflect amendments through the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act (June 17, 2021) — which added June 19 as the most recent federal holiday. July 4, 2026 marks 250 years since the 1776 Declaration of Independence — the United States semiquincentennial. The America250 commission is coordinating nationwide commemorations: NPS events, naturalization ceremonies, replicas of the Liberty Bell ringing tour, and a Macy's fireworks broadcast.
Religious dates on this calendar follow distinct astronomical and ecclesiastical rules. Easter (April 5, 2026) is the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon following March 21 — a rule fixed at the First Council of Nicaea in 325 CE. Rosh Hashanah (Sept 12, 2026) follows the Hebrew lunisolar calendar in its 19-year Metonic cycle. Diwali (Nov 8, 2026) follows the Vikram Samvat Hindu calendar. Each entry was cross-checked against the US Naval Observatory's Multiyear Interactive Computer Almanac (MICA 2.0).
The visual design — a 7-column Sunday-start grid — descended from medieval church liturgical calendars published in books of hours. The 1457 Mainz Psalter (Fust and Schöffer) included a printed monthly grid for the canonical hours. The Sunday-start convention is American/UK custom; ISO 8601 weeks officially start Monday. This calendar uses Sunday-start for visual familiarity but reports ISO week numbers in the fact panel.

“We pinned the 2026 grid to the wall by the kitchen. The 250th Independence Day callout and color-coded religious holidays made it obvious for our team off-site planning. Best calendar PDF I've printed all year.”
“I use the day-of-year fact when filling out NOTAMs and crew rest logs. Today (DOY 147) it tells me exactly how many days into the year I am. Saves a calendar-app lookup on layover wifi.”
“Click-on-date is brilliant — I cross-checked May 27 (Waxing Gibbous) against my AAVSO observation log. The ISO week number is great for organising my variable-star photometry submissions.”
“I work with land registry deeds that quote Julian day numbers. Having the DOY and ISO week shown next to each date saves me a separate lookup against my Almanac.”
