Days Until Easter Sunday

In 2026, a Sunday school superintendent planning a multi-parish Easter Vigil in early 2027, a chocolatier laying out the spring confection floor for retail, and a wedding-coordinator avoiding Holy Week clashes all need the same answer: when, exactly, is the next Easter Sunday? This countdown computes it with the Meeus / Jones / Butcher algorithm — the canonical Western Easter formula — and displays a live ticking egg that cracks as the date approaches.

Easter is a computus: the moveable feast on the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after the vernal equinox (notionally 21 March). The exact rules were fixed by the First Council of Nicaea in AD 325 under Emperor Constantine. The Eastern Orthodox churches still use the Julian-calendar version of the formula, which can place their Pascha up to five weeks after Western Easter in some years.

The algorithm used by this calculator was published by Belgian astronomer Jean Meeus in his 1991 book Astronomical Algorithms, refining a chain of earlier formulas by Gauss (1800), Butcher (1876) and Spencer Jones (1922). It accepts a Gregorian year and returns the date directly — no astronomical observation required. It is the same algorithm used by the United States Naval Observatory and most Western Catholic and Protestant church-calendar software.

Easter's window is 22 March (earliest possible, last occurred in 1818, next in 2285) to 25 April (latest possible, last in 1943, next in 2038). Within that 35-day envelope, the moveable feast cascades through Lent (40 days), Holy Week (Palm Sunday through Holy Saturday), and the 50-day Eastertide ending at Pentecost. Knowing Easter's date sets Ash Wednesday (46 days before), Good Friday (2 days before), Ascension (39 days after) and Pentecost (49 days after).

The English word Easter derives from the Anglo-Saxon goddess Ēostre (recorded by the Venerable Bede in De Temporum Ratione, AD 725). Most other languages preserve the Hebrew root: French Pâques, Spanish Pascua, Italian Pasqua, Greek Pascha — all from Pesach, the Jewish Passover, which Easter chronologically follows. The decoration of eggs is documented as Christian custom from at least the 13th century, codified by the German Lutheran tradition of red-dyed eggs as a Resurrection symbol.

The chocolate Easter egg is an industrial-revolution invention. J.S. Fry & Sons of Bristol sold the first commercial chocolate egg in 1873; Cadbury's Bournville factory followed in 1875. Pre-industrial Eastern Europe gave us pysanky — the dyed-and-waxed egg art of Ukraine, with documented patterns dating to the Trypillian culture (4000 BC). The Easter Bunny shows up in print first in the 1682 work De Ovis Paschalibus by Georg Franck von Franckenau, a German physician.

Why does this calculator matter in 2026? Because Easter's 35-day window forces every spring retailer, school, church, restaurant and wedding planner to peg several dependent dates without a year-on-year mental shortcut. Easter 2025 was 20 April; Easter 2026 was 5 April (already passed); Easter 2027 is 28 March; Easter 2028 is 16 April. Knowing the date 6-12 months out drives chocolate production runs, hotel bookings, school holiday windows, and the dating of Mother's Day in the UK (always the fourth Sunday of Lent — 26 days before Easter).
