From Samhain to Spirit Halloween — 2,500 years of 31 October

In 2026, a haunted-house event organiser in Cincinnati, a primary-school teacher building the trunk-or-treat list, and a Sephora buyer stocking spooky-eyeshadow palettes for the season all need the same calendar lock: how many days until Saturday, 31 October 2026? This countdown keeps a glowing jack-o-lantern in front of you whose eyes brighten as the date approaches, with cobweb corner motifs and a steady candy-coloured digit ticker.

Halloween's deep root is the Celtic festival of Samhain, pronounced "SOW-in", marking the end of harvest and the beginning of winter on the night of 31 October. The festival is documented in the 10th-century Irish manuscript Tochmarc Emire and earlier oral tradition. Bonfires kept evil spirits at bay; livestock were brought down from summer pasture; the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead was held to be thinnest on this night.

Christian overlay arrived in the 9th century when Pope Gregory IV (AD 837) moved All Saints' Day to 1 November, with the eve before becoming All Hallows' Eve — eventually contracted to Halloween. The Reformation in England largely suppressed the festival but Irish and Scottish immigration to North America in the 19th century — particularly the Irish Famine of 1845-1852 — re-seeded the tradition there. Trick-or-treating in its current form is documented in Anoka, Minnesota in 1920 and spread nationally during the 1930s.

The jack-o-lantern began as a hollowed turnip or rutabaga in Ireland, carved with grim faces and lit with embers to ward off "Stingy Jack", a folkloric figure who outwitted the Devil and was condemned to walk the earth with only a coal in a turnip for light. When Irish immigrants arrived in North America they discovered the indigenous pumpkin was vastly easier to carve. The first published reference to a pumpkin jack-o-lantern is from 1834. The first pumpkin-carving contest on record was 1900 in New England.

The 31 October date itself sits on a fixed Gregorian-calendar day, which means the day-of-week rotates: 2025 Friday, 2026 Saturday (best Halloween night of the decade for adult parties), 2027 Sunday, 2028 Tuesday, 2029 Wednesday. Saturday-night Halloweens drive measurably higher costume-retail sales — National Retail Federation 2024 data showed a 14% lift over weekday years.

Modern commercial Halloween is huge. The US National Retail Federation 2024 forecast was $11.6 billion in Halloween spending, with the largest single category being decorations, followed by costumes and candy. Spirit Halloween's 1,500+ pop-up locations are an October fixture in vacant US shopping-centre real estate. Disney's Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Universal's Halloween Horror Nights have become multi-month event franchises.

Global variations matter for this calendar. Día de los Muertos (Mexico, 1-2 November) is UNESCO-recognised Intangible Cultural Heritage (2008) and is a related-but-distinct observance celebrating ancestors, not warding off spirits. Allerheiligen (Germany, 1 Nov) is a quieter Catholic feast day. Obon (Japan, mid-August) is the closest Asian analogue. Knowing the calendar window helps event organisers serving multi-cultural audiences avoid scheduling clashes.

I open the gates 1 October and need every staff member to know exactly how many days are left until peak. The glowing jack-o-lantern widget is on every monitor in the break room. The Mischief Night/Detroit Devil's Night detail is real industry knowledge.

Most Halloween countdowns ignore us. Yours places Día de los Muertos correctly as related-but-distinct on 1-2 November, with the UNESCO recognition. That earns respect. The countdown synchronises our marigold-supply chain perfectly.

Australia's Halloween is growing fast and the countdown plus the costume-list save is exactly what my Year 4 teachers needed. Saturday night 31 October 2026 is locked in our parent-communication calendar.

Production lead times for HHN scare costumes are six months out. Knowing the date plus the weekday plus the historical NRF revenue data on the page (14% Saturday lift) supports our budget memos. Thorough.
