How to use the Onam Countdown
- Watch the pookalam rotate — 4 concentric petal layers (16, 12, 10, 8 petals in marigold, jasmine, hibiscus, rose) rotate slowly above the banana-leaf sadhya scene with King Mahabali (Onathappan) figure beside.
- Read the four-block live counter for days, hours, minutes, seconds to 00:00 IST on Sunday 6 September 2026 (Thiru Onam main day).
- Check the Atham panel for the days remaining to Thursday 27 August 2026 — Day 1 when pookalam laying begins.
- Scan the 10-day grid — Atham, Chithira, Chodhi, Vishakam, Anizham, Thriketta, Moolam, Pooradam, Uthradam, Thiru Onam — each with its individual countdown.
- Tag prep tasks by Atham, Pookalam, Sadhya, Boat Race, or Thiru Onam and save up to 10 in your browser's localStorage.
From Vamana's Three Steps to Dubai World Trade Centre — 1,200 years of Onam
In 2026, a Kochi sadhya catering manager booking 240 tonnes of banana leaves for the festival weekend, a Trivandrum tour operator selling 45,000 tickets for the Aranmula snake-boat race, and a Dubai Malayalee Association president planning the cultural-evening logistics for 18,000 NRIs at the Dubai World Trade Centre all need the same number live in one tab: how many days until Sunday 6 September 2026 — Thiru Onam, the main day of Kerala's 10-day harvest festival. This tool runs an SVG of an intricate pookalam (flower rangoli) circled by a sadhya banana-leaf feast, a 10-day countdown from Atham to Thiru Onam, and the 26-dish sadhya menu breakdown.
Onam (Malayalam: ഓണം) commemorates the annual visit of King Mahabali — the legendary asura ruler whose reign Kerala remembers as the golden age of perfect justice, prosperity, and equality. The festival is dated by the Malayalam (Kollam) calendar to the nakshatra (lunar mansion) of Thiruvonam in the month of Chingam — falling in August-September Gregorian. The 2026 Thiru Onam is on Sunday 6 September; the 10-day observance begins on Atham (Thursday 27 August). The Malayalam New Year (Chingam 1) also falls in mid-August, immediately before Onam.
The Mahabali mythology comes from the Bhagavata Purana (canto 8) and the Vamana Purana. Mahabali was a virtuous asura king (grandson of Bhakta Prahlad) whose reign was so prosperous that even the devas grew jealous. To check his rising power, Vishnu took his fifth avatar Vamana — a dwarf Brahmin boy — and approached Mahabali asking for three paces of land. When Mahabali agreed, Vamana grew to cosmic size: his first step covered the earth, his second the heavens, and for the third Mahabali offered his own head. Vamana pushed him into Patala (underworld) but granted his boon: to visit his subjects once a year — that visit is Onam.
The pookalam (Malayalam: പൂക്കളം, pū = flower + kaḷam = ground) is the iconic flower-petal rangoli laid out at every Kerala home's entrance during the 10 days, growing more elaborate each day. Day 1 (Atham): single concentric ring of yellow chrysanthemums. By Day 10 (Thiru Onam): 10-layer multi-coloured concentric design 4-6 ft diameter, using marigold, chrysanthemum, jasmine, rose, hibiscus, lotus petals plus rice flour, turmeric and natural pigments. The pookalam is the welcoming-mat for King Mahabali; tradition forbids walking on it.
The Onam sadhya (literally ‘banquet’) is one of the world's largest vegetarian meals served per sitting — 26 to 30 dishes precisely arranged on a single fresh banana leaf in a strict left-to-right order. The leaf is placed with the tapered tip pointing left. Dishes are served in a prescribed sequence: salt, pickles (achaar), pappadam, banana chips on the left edge; vegetables (thoran, mezhukkupuratti); curries (sambar, rasam, avial, kaalan, olan, erissery) in the centre; rice mounded in the middle-right; and 3-4 payasam (sweet pudding) varieties at the end. Total cooking starts 36 hours before serving; a 50-person sadhya requires ~150 kg of raw ingredients.
The Aranmula Uthrattathi Vallam Kali (snake boat race) is the most famous Onam aquatic event, held on the Pampa river at Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple — one of the 108 Divya Desams (sacred Vishnu sites) of Vaishnavism. 30+ palliyodam (snake boats), each 100-138 ft long and crewed by 64-100 oarsmen plus singers chanting Vanchipattu (boatman songs), race in 2-hour heats. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race at Alappuzha (since 1952, named after Pandit Nehru's visit) is the modern commercial spectacle — 20+ chundan vallams with 100+ rowers each compete on Punnamada Lake before 200,000 spectators.
Modern Onam: 35 million Malayalis worldwide celebrate (Kerala diaspora estimate). Kerala Tourism declared Onam Week 2024 generated INR 7,400 crore tourism revenue (Kerala Tourism Department). Onakkodi (festival new clothes) drives Kerala's retail apparel peak with 4.2 million ethnic-wear units sold during the 10 days. Banana-leaf demand reaches 240 tonnes statewide; in Gulf NRI households alone, 65 tonnes are imported from Kerala in the week before. Air India, Indigo, Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways operate Kerala-bound special flights; Cochin (COK) and Trivandrum (TRV) airports see 28% passenger volume spikes in the Onam week.

Why this calculator exists
In 2026, a Kochi sadhya catering chef booking 240 tonnes of banana leaves and 1,500-family meal slots, a Trivandrum tour operator selling 45,000 Aranmula snake-boat-race tickets, and a Dubai Malayalee Association president planning the 18,000-NRI cultural evening at Dubai World Trade Centre all need the same number live in one tab: how many days until Sunday 6 September 2026 (Thiru Onam). The Malayalam calendar slides Onam ~11 days earlier each year. 2024 = 15 Sept; 2025 = 5 Sept; 2026 = 6 Sept; 2027 = 23 Sept.
What does the answer really mean?
102 days to Thiru Onam means Kerala's tourism sector has ~14.6 weeks to deliver the INR 7,400-crore Onam tourism season (Kerala Tourism Department 2024 baseline). Kerala's retail apparel sector will sell 4.2 million ethnic-wear units (kasavu sarees, mundu, kurta sets) across the 10 days. Cochin (COK) and Trivandrum (TRV) airports will see 28% passenger-volume spikes in the Onam week. The Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple — one of the 108 Vaishnava Divya Desams — will host 30+ palliyodam snake boats with 64-100 oarsmen each on the Pampa river.

“We serve sadhya to 1,500 families across Kochi during Onam week. The 26-dish menu breakdown plus the 10-day progression (Atham pookalam → Thiru Onam main sadhya) is exactly the timeline I print on the kitchen whiteboard. The 36-hour cooking-start figure for a 50-person sadhya is accurate to the minute — tested.”
“The references to the Bhagavata Purana canto 8 Vamana avatar narrative, the Kollam Era Malayalam calendar (epoch 825 CE), and the Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple as one of the 108 Divya Desams are textbook-accurate. My MA students use this page's 7-paragraph history article as the primer for the ‘harvest festival anthropology’ module.”
“Our Aranmula palliyodam race on the Pampa river draws 45,000 spectators. The boat-race preset (Uthrattathi on 13 Sept 2026) plus the 10-day Onam countdown gives us one URL for our 30 boat clubs to share. The Nehru Trophy 1952 historical note is accurate; the 64-100 oarsmen per boat is the correct working complement.”
“We host 18,000 NRIs at Dubai World Trade Centre for our Onam cultural evening. Tagging tasks per day (Atham pookalam materials, Sadhya banana-leaf import, Pulikkali costume tailoring) makes the volunteer-team WhatsApp coordination effortless. The 65-tonne banana-leaf Gulf-import figure is correct — we order through Malabar Gold flights.”
