LED minute meter|millisecond precision

Minutes Between Two Datetimes

Count the exact elapsed minutes between two datetimes - to the second. Bespoke 7-digit LED counter ticks up rapidly while a semicircular gauge needle shows the per-day fraction. UTC-millisecond math is DST-safe.

Need seconds resolution? Seconds between dates.

Formula
minutes = (end_ms - start_ms) / 60,000

Worked: 09:00 to 17:30 -> 30,600,000 ms / 60,000 = 510 minutes = 8h 30m. UTC-millisecond subtraction handles DST automatically.

How to count minutes between two datetimes

  1. 1
    Enter the start datetime in the first picker.
  2. 2
    Enter the end datetime in the second picker.
  3. 3
    Read the 7-digit LED counter - shows total elapsed minutes.
  4. 4
    Read the gauge needle - shows per-day fraction (0-1440).
  5. 5
    Save the entry to your browser-local history.

Babylonian base-60 to PagerDuty SLA: the history of the minute

In 2026, a Berlin SaaS customer-success lead measuring first response time against a 12-minute SLA needs minute-exact deltas between ticket-created and first-reply timestamps. This calculator uses UTC-millisecond subtraction, which never drifts on DST boundaries.

The minute as a sixtieth of an hour traces back to the Babylonian sexagesimal (base-60) numeral system around 2000 BCE, transmitted through the Hellenistic astronomers and inherited by the Islamic Golden Age scholars who refined astronomical timekeeping. The word minute comes from the Latin pars minuta prima - first small part - and the second from pars minuta secunda. Both units became fixed in civil use only after the spread of mechanical clocks in the 14th century European monastic and town-hall tradition.

The minute is the natural unit of customer-service operations. Industry standard metrics like average handle time (AHT) for call centres, first response time (FRT) for support tickets, mean time to acknowledge (MTTA) and mean time to resolve (MTTR) for incident response are all reported in minutes. Atlassian Statuspage, PagerDuty, and Datadog all bucket their SLA dashboards by the minute. This calculator gives you the exact elapsed minute count between two timestamps.

ISO 8601 (1988, revised 2019) standardises the YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS extended datetime format that the HTML5 datetime-local input enforces. The standard's duration format uses PT[n]M to denote n minutes - distinguishable from P[n]M (n months) by the mandatory T prefix that separates the date portion from the time portion of a duration string.

JavaScript's Date primitive stores time as a 64-bit signed integer of milliseconds since the Unix epoch (1970-01-01T00:00:00 UTC). Subtracting two Date objects returns a number of milliseconds; dividing by 60,000 yields minutes. This is the maths every clock app, calendar, and scheduler does internally. The Unix epoch chosen by Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie at Bell Labs in 1971 was a practical compromise - early enough to encode birth dates, late enough to fit in 32 bits at the time.

Aviation logs flight time in tenths of an hour (0.1 hour = 6 minutes) because that maps cleanly to the segmental timestamps recorded by air-traffic control. A 47-minute taxi-and-takeoff segment is logged as 0.8 hours on the pilot's log. FAA Part 61.51 specifies the rounding rule. This calculator does not round - it returns the exact minute count to the second.

Sleep research has popularised minute-level math. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the standard sleep assessment used by clinicians since 1989, asks for sleep latency in minutes (how long it takes to fall asleep) and total sleep time in hours and minutes. Sleep-tracking wearables (Oura, Whoop, Apple Watch) all report sleep stages in minutes, with REM cycles averaging 90 minutes.

Television advertising is sold by the minute (or the 30-second spot, half a minute). A US prime-time hour contains roughly 42 minutes of programming and 18 minutes of ads. Streaming services display total runtime in minutes (a 145-minute film, a 50-minute episode). This calculator answers the related question: how many minutes are between scheduled airing time and current time, useful for promo countdowns.

FRT SLA is 12 minutes. I paste two timestamps, get the minute delta - no spreadsheet, no Excel rounding bug. The minute-meter SVG ticking up rapidly is a nice visual touch for our weekly retro.

30-minute call slots that often slip to 47 minutes. The exact minute count between calendar.start and calendar.end is what I feed into our pipeline analysis. Bookmarked.

Retro starts at 14:00 and runs to 15:30. I plan agenda by 5-minute slots = 18 slots. The minute total here keeps me honest when we overrun.
