Formula

school_days = Σ (1 if weekday ∈ {Mon..Fri} and date ∉ holidays else 0)

Worked: from 27 May 2026 (Wed) to 19 Jun 2026 (Fri) inclusive = 24 calendar days. Subtract 6 weekend days and 1 holiday (19 Jun Juneteenth) → 24 − 6 − 1 = 17 instructional days.

How to count school days remaining (5 steps)

  1. 1. Pick a start date in the right-side form (defaults to today).
  2. 2. Pick the target end date (the published last day of your school year, the day of your AP exam, or the day of your final).
  3. 3. Review the calendar grid. Amber cells are school days, rose cells are holidays, grey cells are weekends.
  4. 4. Add any district-specific closures (PD days, snow days, religious observances) under "Custom holiday closures".
  5. 5. Read the instructional-day count from the hero cards at the top of the page. Save the range to localStorage if you plan to come back.

Instructional days: the 180-day rule and its origins

In the spring of 2026, an AP Biology teacher mapping the last six weeks of curriculum coverage, an 11th-grade GPA-anxious student stretching a B+ to an A-, and a school nurse counting the medication doses remaining in her cabinet all need the same number: how many actual school days are left, not calendar days. This tool draws a live calendar grid between any two dates and counts weekdays excluding the 25 US public-school holidays in 2025-26, giving an exact instructional-day count.

The distinction between calendar days and instructional days is codified in nearly every US state. California Ed Code 46208 defines an instructional day as one where pupils receive at least the minimum-day minutes (typically 240 minutes for grades 4-12, 200 for K-3). Texas Education Code 25.081 expresses the year as 75,600 instructional minutes, which translates to 180 days at 7 hours but can also be achieved by 200 days at 6.3 hours. Massachusetts 603 CMR 27.00, Florida F.S. 1003.43, and Illinois 105 ILCS 5/10-19 all use 180 days.

Horace Mann (Massachusetts Board of Education, 1837) introduced the concept of measurable instructional time as a quality lever, arguing in his 1842 annual report that 6-month rural terms were insufficient. The 180-day standard solidified between 1880 and 1910 with the rise of urban industrial labour and compulsory-attendance laws. Massachusetts 1852 (first), Mississippi 1918 (last); by 1918 every state required some minimum of school days, though the count ranged from 120 to 200.

Snow days, hurricane days, and other emergency closures push districts to build reserves into the calendar. Most Northern states reserve 5 closure days; Southern states reserve 1-2. When closures exceed the reserve, districts must extend the calendar (typically adding days at the end of the school year in June) or apply for a state-issued waiver. The 2018-19 Polar Vortex pushed many Midwest districts to add 4-6 days; the 2020 COVID closures triggered waivers in all 50 states.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA, 20 U.S.C. § 1232g, enacted 21 August 1974) regulates educational records but not the school calendar itself; the calendar is a state-and-local matter. Federal involvement is limited to the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA, 2015) accountability provisions, which require state-set proficiency benchmarks but defer day-count decisions to states. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) publishes annual instructional-day statistics aggregated by state.

The Pomodoro technique (Francesco Cirillo, late 1980s) and Cal Newport's Deep Work (2016) both argue that humans plan better when the timeline is finite, named, and broken into chunks. A teacher who knows precisely 32 instructional days remain — not "about six weeks" — can pace 24 hours of remaining AP Bio content across 32 sessions instead of guessing. A student with 14 school days remaining can plan two final-exam study cycles instead of one open-ended marathon.

Modern instructional planning tools (Canvas, Schoology, PowerSchool, Blackboard, Google Classroom) all expose an academic calendar with school days highlighted; this widget condenses that view into a single grid. The implementation walks each day between start and end, increments the count only if (a) the weekday is Monday-Friday and (b) the ISO date is not in the holiday lookup. Custom holidays can be added via the input box on the right side of the widget.

Houston ISD ends 5 June 2026 and I needed to know whether to compress mitochondrial respiration into 4 or 5 lab sessions. The calendar grid shows me 8 instructional days remaining with no holidays; that gives me 4 labs plus the AP review day. The holiday exclusion saved me from over-planning.

I have a 91.4% in AP Chem and the final exam can pull me to 93 if I plan it right. Seeing exactly 14 school days remaining (excluding Memorial Day and weekends) let me set a 14-session study plan instead of guessing 'about three weeks'. Saved me a panic.

Brookline ends 25 June 2026. I use this to count down instructional days to senior internship presentation week, plus to verify our compliance with the 180-day MA mandate after our two snow days in February. The custom-holiday input correctly added our two snow days.

Counting medication doses for 14 students with daily prescriptions requires the exact school-day number. A days-until counter that doesn't exclude weekends would have me overstocking by 40%. This page's holiday list correctly excluded Memorial Day and the Friday before. Genuinely useful.
