Understanding Time Zone Overlaps
How Time Zones Work
The world is divided into 24 primary time zones, each roughly 15 degrees of longitude wide. However, many regions use non-standard offsets like UTC+5:30 (India) or UTC+5:45 (Nepal) for practical reasons.
Our tool uses the IANA Time Zone Database (tzdata), the same source used by your operating system and major tech companies, ensuring accurate DST transitions and historical data.
Finding the Golden Window
The "golden window" is the time period when all participants are within their working hours. For global teams spanning many time zones, this window may be small or non-existent.
When no perfect overlap exists, we calculate the "least bad" option by minimizing the number of people who would need to meet outside their preferred hours, prioritizing those marked as "priority" cities.
Daylight Saving Time
DST can shift meeting times by an hour twice a year. Not all regions observe DST, and those that do may change on different dates. Our tool automatically accounts for these changes using the Intl API, so you always see accurate local times for any date.
Remote Team Best Practices
- •Rotate meeting times to share the burden fairly
- •Record meetings for those who can't attend live
- •Use async communication when real-time isn't necessary
- •Always specify the timezone when sharing times
