UTC (Zulu) - IST|India is exactly 5:30 ahead, always

UTC to IST Converter

Convert Coordinated Universal Time (Zulu / Z) to Indian Standard Time. The offset is a constant +5:30 hours year-round - neither UTC nor IST observe Daylight Saving Time. Built around the IANA UTC and Asia/Kolkata identifiers for cloud, aviation, and astronomy timestamps.

Looking for GMT? GMT to IST (the same as UTC in winter, BST in summer).

The formula

IST = UTC + 5h 30m (always)

Worked: 12:00 UTC + 5:30 = 17:30 = 5:30 PM IST. 21:00 UTC + 5:30 = 26:30 = 2:30 AM IST next day. Because the offset never varies, there are no DST edge cases or transitional minutes.

Five steps to read a UTC timestamp in IST

  1. Identify the UTC hour. Pull the HH from a server log (e.g., 2026-05-27T09:30:00Z) - the trailing Z confirms UTC.
  2. Identify the minute. Read the MM exactly as written.
  3. Add 5:30. Mentally or via the calculator. No DST, no exceptions.
  4. Check for day rollover. If HH+5:30 exceeds 24, the IST date is the next day.
  5. Save. Click Save to keep the lookup in your local history.

From the 1972 atomic redefinition to GPS satellites and Indian NavIC

Coordinated Universal Time was created on 1 January 1972 as the world's primary time reference, replacing Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) which had served since the 1884 International Meridian Conference in Washington DC. UTC is defined by an ensemble of about 450 atomic clocks distributed across roughly 80 national metrology laboratories, weighted and combined by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) at Sevres near Paris. The output, called TAI (International Atomic Time), is adjusted with occasional leap seconds to stay within 0.9 seconds of UT1, the Earth-rotation-based time.

The acronym UTC is a deliberate compromise. English speakers wanted CUT (Coordinated Universal Time); French speakers wanted TUC (Temps Universel Coordonne). The ITU chose UTC in 1970 so neither language won. The same compromise produced the SI second, the metre, and the rest of the modern unit system - international metrology is built on quietly negotiated middle-grounds.

Leap seconds were introduced in 1972 to handle the gradual slowing of Earth's rotation (currently about 1.8 milliseconds per century). Twenty-seven leap seconds have been added through May 2026, with no insertion having occurred since the end of 2016. The General Conference on Weights and Measures voted in November 2022 to abandon leap seconds by 2035, after which UTC will drift slowly away from solar time but will be much simpler for digital systems to manage.

Indian Standard Time was established in 1906 at the Madras Observatory using the 82.5 degree east meridian, which passes through Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh. The offset is UTC+5:30 - precisely five and a half hours ahead of UTC. India does not observe Daylight Saving Time; the offset is constant year-round. The Indian National Physical Laboratory (NPL India) in Delhi maintains the master IST signal using a caesium-fountain primary clock standard and disseminates it to the country via NTP servers, GPS receivers, and an HF time broadcast on 5 and 10 MHz from station ATA.

The relationship between UTC and IST is the simplest of any major-economy bilateral timezone pair. No DST, no varying offsets, no quarterly recalculation. To convert UTC to IST you add 5 hours 30 minutes. To go the other way you subtract the same. A 09:00 UTC global all-hands lands at 14:30 IST in Bengaluru, 14:30 in Mumbai, 14:30 in Hyderabad - everywhere in India, simultaneously. This determinism is why most modern Indian SaaS companies (Freshworks, Zoho, Postman, Druva) standardise their internal calendar invites in IST and let their UTC global counterparts do the math.

Modern cloud infrastructure runs on UTC by convention. AWS CloudWatch logs in UTC by default; Kubernetes timestamps events in UTC; PostgreSQL stores timestamps in UTC and converts at display time; Linux date commands default to UTC when the TZ environment variable is unset. The cardinal rule of distributed systems engineering - store in UTC, convert at the edge - is the reason every modern programming language ships with a UTC-aware datetime library. JavaScript's Intl.DateTimeFormat (which this calculator uses) consults the IANA Time Zone Database to do the conversion correctly.

GPS time is closely related to UTC but is not identical. GPS time was synchronised to UTC at 00:00:00 on 6 January 1980 and has not applied any leap seconds since, so GPS is currently 18 seconds ahead of UTC. Modern GPS receivers compute the offset and report UTC to the user. The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS / NavIC) uses its own atomic-clock-based time, IRNWT, which is also coordinated to UTC via the NPL India standard.

Our production logs are in UTC; our on-call rotations are in IST; our PagerDuty escalation rules in EST. The UTC -> IST conversion is the single most common mental-math task on my desk. The constant +5:30 (no DST) page makes the documentation easy to share with junior engineers.

We work in Z (Zulu = UTC) for flight plans and IST for crew rosters. This page is the cleanest UTC-IST presentation I have seen - the Z-tag and the always-5:30 reminder is exactly the operational truth my schedulers need.

Frankfurt switches between CET (UTC+1) and CEST (UTC+2) twice a year, and I always lose track. Reading the IST clock in UTC reference is a much simpler mental model. The sun/moon icon is a delightful touch.

X.509 cert validity windows are always UTC; client deployment teams want IST. The constant +5:30 statement here is exactly the documentation snippet I now include in every security advisory. Thank you for getting the no-DST nuance right.
