About Cornflower Blue
Cornflower blue, #6495ed, is medium blue softened toward periwinkle — named for the wildflower that once dotted every grain field. It is friendly blue: professional without coldness, bright without shouting.
History
The cornflower (bachelor’s button) was a beloved European field weed, Kaiser Wilhelm I’s favorite flower, and France’s remembrance bloom (the bleuet). The color entered software fame as a certain design tool’s default and a certain film’s monologue prop.
Psychology
Cornflower reads approachable, calm and trustworthy — blue with the guard down. It is the blue for products that want competence without corporate stiffness.
In design
Cornflower is a versatile mid-light blue: soft CTAs, links on dark, gentle brand primaries. Large-text safe on white (3.4:1). Pair with cream, coral, navy and warm gray. It plays friendly where royal blue plays formal.
In culture
Bachelor’s buttons, the bleuet of French remembrance, cornflower-blue eyes in every romance novel: the field weed that everyone kept anyway.
