About Eggplant
Eggplant, #614051, is purple darkened toward brown-black — the vegetable’s glossy skin as a color. It is the purple family’s executive: all the depth, none of the theater.
History
The aubergine (British) and eggplant (American — early cultivars were white and egg-shaped) named the shade in the 19th century; 1990s interiors and Slack’s sidebar gave it two separate revivals.
Psychology
Eggplant reads sophisticated, grounded and quietly creative — purple that signs off budgets. It replaces black where warmth is wanted and navy where originality is.
In design
Eggplant is a premium dark surface: cream, gold and blush type glow on it, and it passes as near-black ink on white (10.2:1). Pair with sage, brass, dusty pink and gray. Slack proved it can carry an entire product identity.
In culture
The emoji changed the vegetable’s reputation forever; the color kept its dignity. Aubergine remains British design vocabulary’s favorite “expensive purple.”
