About Periwinkle
Periwinkle, #ccccff, is blue and lavender refusing to choose — named for the five-petaled vinca flower. It is the palette’s great ambiguity: ask a room whether it is blue or purple and you will start a friendly argument (there is a famous internet debate about exactly this).
History
The flower colored European hedgerows and the name colored Crayola boxes (added 1949), dress shirts and quiet wedding palettes. Pantone’s 2022 “Very Peri” — periwinkle with extra red — made the ambiguity official trend material.
Psychology
Periwinkle reads gentle, dreamy and diplomatic — blue’s calm wearing purple’s imagination. It is the serenity color that avoids both baby-blue sweetness and lavender’s perfume.
In design
Periwinkle is a wash and accent tint: lovely as hero backgrounds with indigo ink, hopeless as text (1.5:1 on white). Pair with cream, dusty rose, denim and silver. Dark-mode UIs use periwinkle-tinted text (#c7d2fe class) as their softest secondary.
In culture
Periwinkle snails, periwinkle hedges, the blue-or-purple debate: a color whose identity crisis is its charm. In folklore vinca was the “flower of memory.”
