Farm Finance calculators

Decide the money side of farming fast — turn yield, price and cost into net profit, gross margin, ROI and break-even, size your loan EMI and KCC limit, and check your farm's financial health.

Will it pay? Start with the numbers.

A crop, a cow, a tractor or a polyhouse only earns its keep when returns clear cost with room to spare. The cleanest test is the benefit-cost ratio: a field crop should sit at 1.3–1.5, and anything under 1.2 deserves a hard look. Compare enterprises on gross margin per acre first, then on margin per unit of your scarcest resource — water, labour or capital.

Borrowing? Keep the effective rate low (interest subvention can pull a KCC crop loan to about 4%) and your DSCR above 1.25. Investing? Demand a payback inside the asset's life and an ROI above your cost of capital. These 102 calculators answer each of those questions in your own currency.

The Farm Finance hub bundles 102 free tools across 7 areas — each one instant, private and in your browser, no sign-up. Built for farmers, agronomists, agri-students, FPOs and agribusinesses worldwide.

What is farm finance?

Farm finance is the money management of a farm business — costing what you grow, pricing and selling it, financing assets with loans and subsidies, insuring against weather and price shocks, and tracking whether the whole operation stays solvent and liquid. Good farm finance is decision-first: every number should answer "should I plant, borrow, buy or sell?" These tools cover the full cycle — profit and margins, loans and EMI, ROI and payback, insurance and hedging, financial ratios, machinery economics and marketing.

Plan your farm finances in 5 steps

  1. 1

    Pin down your real cost

Use the Cost of Cultivation Calculator to total every input — seed, fertilizer, labour, irrigation, machinery and interest — for a true cost per acre. Everything else builds on this number.

  2. 2

    Test whether it pays

Run the Crop Profit and Gross Margin calculators with your expected yield and market price. Check the benefit-cost ratio (aim above 1.3) and the net profit per acre against your next-best crop.

  3. 3

    Find your safety margin

Use the Break-Even Yield and Break-Even Price calculators to learn the worst price or yield you can survive. The gap between break-even and expected is your margin of safety.

  4. 4

Cost the money and the machine

If you are borrowing, size the loan with the Farm Loan EMI and KCC Eligibility tools and check repayment with DSCR. For equipment, compare Buy vs Hire and the true cost per hour.

  5. 5

    Check the whole-farm health

Once a season, run the FFSC-16 Financial Scorecard, Net Farm Income and Cash-Flow tools to confirm liquidity, solvency and that the year's plan actually leaves a surplus.

Frequently asked questions

Is this crop profitable — how do I know?+

A crop pays when its benefit-cost ratio (B:C) is above 1 and its gross margin per acre comfortably beats your next-best option. Multiply expected yield by price to get revenue, subtract the full cost of cultivation, and divide revenue by cost for the B:C. A healthy field crop runs a B:C of 1.3–1.5; below 1.2 the margin of safety is thin. Use the Crop Profit and Gross Margin calculators to get net profit per acre, ROI and break-even in your own currency.

What is break-even yield, and how is it calculated?+

Break-even yield is the harvest you must achieve, at a given price, just to cover all costs — below it you lose money. The formula is break-even yield = total cost per acre ÷ selling price per unit. For example, at ₹40,000/acre cost and ₹20/kg, you need 2,000 kg/acre to break even. Break-even price flips it: total cost ÷ expected yield. Both are in the Break-Even Yield and Break-Even Price calculators, with your margin of safety.

How do I calculate my farm loan EMI?+

EMI = P × r × (1+r)^n ÷ ((1+r)^n − 1), where P is principal, r is the monthly interest rate (annual ÷ 12) and n is the number of months. On a ₹5 lakh tractor loan at 9% for 7 years the EMI is about ₹8,045. The Farm Loan EMI Calculator returns the monthly EMI, total interest and a full year-by-year amortization, and works for crop, KCC and tractor loans.

What is my Kisan Credit Card (KCC) limit?+

Your KCC crop-loan limit is the scale of finance for your crop multiplied by your area, plus a 10% allowance for post-harvest and household needs and a 20% cost-escalation cushion. So a higher per-acre scale of finance or more area lifts your limit. The KCC Eligibility Calculator gives the per-acre limit, the first-year limit and the 5-year limit lenders typically sanction.

Should I store my grain or sell at harvest?+

Store only if the expected later price beats today's price by more than the cost to carry — storage rent, interest on the locked-up money and storage losses (shrinkage and quality). The break-even future price = today's price + carrying cost per unit. If the market's forward price (or your expectation) sits above that, carry; otherwise sell now. The Store or Sell and Grain Storage Carry calculators find the crossover month for you.

Is it cheaper to buy a tractor or hire one?+

Buying wins only above a break-even number of hours per year, because ownership loads fixed costs (depreciation, interest, insurance, shelter) onto every hour you use it. Below that threshold, custom hiring is cheaper. Most small holdings fall short of the break-even hours and are better off hiring. The Machinery Buy vs Hire and DIRTI-5 cost calculators give the cost each way and the break-even hours.

What is a good debt-to-asset ratio for a farm?+

Debt-to-asset ratio = total liabilities ÷ total assets. Under 0.30 (30%) is a strong, low-risk solvency position; 0.30–0.60 is moderate; above 0.60 is high risk because too much of the farm is financed by debt. Lenders also watch the debt-service coverage ratio (DSCR) — income ÷ loan payments — and want it above 1.25. Both are in the Debt-to-Asset and DSCR calculators.

How much crop-insurance premium will I actually pay?+

Under PMFBY the farmer pays a capped rate of the sum insured — 2% for Kharif food and oilseed crops, 1.5% for Rabi, and 5% for commercial and horticultural crops — and the government subsidises the rest of the actuarial premium. On a ₹40,000/acre sum insured a 2% Kharif rate is ₹800/acre. The Crop Insurance Premium Calculator shows your share, the subsidy and an illustrative payout.

What is gross margin and why use it to compare crops?+

Gross margin = gross revenue − variable (operating) costs, per acre or hectare. It deliberately ignores fixed costs (land, machinery) that don't change between crops, so it is the cleanest way to rank which enterprise earns more on the same land. Compare crops on gross margin per acre first, then on gross margin per unit of your scarcest resource (water, labour or capital). Use the Gross Margin and Enterprise Gross-Margin Ranking tools.

How do I work out my true net realization from a mandi sale?+

Net realization = sale value − commission − hamali (loading/unloading) − weighing − transport − any market fee, divided by the quantity for the net price per quintal. These deductions often shave 6–10% off the headline price, so a ₹2,000/quintal quote can net ₹1,820. The Mandi Net Realization Calculator itemises every deduction and gives your true take-home per quintal.

What ROI or payback should a farm investment have?+

As a rule of thumb, aim for a simple payback under the asset's useful life and an annual ROI above your cost of capital (the loan rate or what the money would otherwise earn). A drip system or solar pump that pays back in 3–5 years and runs 10+ years is a strong investment. For perennials, judge on NPV and IRR rather than simple payback. The Farm ROI & Payback and Orchard NPV/IRR calculators do both.

Which finance tool should I start with?+

Start with cost: the Cost of Cultivation Calculator establishes your real per-acre cost. Then run the Crop Profit and Break-Even calculators to see whether the price and yield clear that cost. If you are borrowing, add the Farm Loan EMI and KCC Eligibility tools; if investing in an asset, use Farm ROI & Payback. Finish with the FFSC-16 Financial Scorecard once a year to check the whole farm's health.
