Energy Rising and Dissolving
Feel the breath as energy rising and dissolving; in its dissolution, peace.
The conversation of Devi & Bhairava
A faithful retelling of the dialogue that frames this verse — the Goddess asks, and Bhairava answers with the teaching above. (The śloka is the scripture; the conversation dramatizes its meaning, in English and Hindi.)
I have watched the breath as air, Lord. Is there something subtler in it than air?
There is. Feel the in-breath not as air entering but as a current of living energy rising; feel the out-breath as that same current sinking and dissolving. The breath is my Shakti moving in you.
And where shall I rest my attention — on the rising, or on the dissolving?
On the dissolving, beloved. Let each out-breath dissolve completely, holding nothing back. In the moment the energy melts away, a peace opens that you did not make. Rest in that openness between dissolutions.
So peace is not something I build, but what remains when I stop holding on?
Exactly so. Build nothing. Let the energy rise and pass, rise and pass, and notice the unchanging openness in which it rises — that is the awareness that never dissolves, and it is your own self.
Why it works
Reframing breath as energy (śakti) rather than air shifts attention from the mechanical act to its felt current. Following that current as it rises and then completely dissolves trains the mind to release rather than grasp. The peace the verse names is not produced; it is what remains when the contraction of holding-on lets go at the end of each out-breath.
How to practice
- 1Sense the in-breath not as air but as a current of energy rising.
- 2Sense the out-breath as that current sinking and dissolving.
- 3Let each dissolution be complete — nothing held back.
- 4Between dissolutions, rest in the openness that remains.
The deeper story
This verse seeds the later Kashmiri doctrine of laya — dissolution as a yoga in its own right. Rather than building a state, the practitioner repeatedly lets one arise and pass, until the gaps of dissolution are recognised as the steady, self-luminous awareness that never dissolves.
