The Energy of Union
At the height of union, attention turns from the other to the living energy itself.
The conversation of Devi & Bhairava
A faithful retelling of the dialogue that frames this verse — the Goddess asks, and Bhairava answers with the teaching above. (The śloka is the scripture; the conversation dramatizes its meaning, in English and Hindi.)
You honour even the joys of the body, Lord. But in the heat of union, attention is wholly on the other. Where is the doorway there?
At the very height of union, when the body floods with energy, turn attention away from the partner and toward the living energy itself, surging within you.
Is this teaching, then, about the body and its pleasures?
It is about Shakti, not the technique of the flesh. The rush you feel is not something the other gave you — it is the spanda, the living pulse of consciousness, rising from within. Drop the form and the other; abide in the pulsing energy alone.
So any peak of energy could carry me to the same place?
Any peak, rightly attended, is a chariot to the same recognition the quiet breath-gap offers. Pleasure is not the enemy of the path; clinging to its cause is. Ride the energy to its source, and the Goddess pulsing in you is revealed as your own nature.
Why it works
At a peak of intimate union the body floods with intense energy normally credited to the partner. The verse redirects attention from the other person to the bare felt energy (śakti) itself. Sustained there, the rush is recognised not as something the other gave but as the spanda — the living pulse of awareness — surging from within.
How to practice
- 1In a moment of deep intimacy or pleasure, do not lose awareness in the object.
- 2Turn attention to the rising wave of energy itself.
- 3Let the energy be felt as energy — vast, impersonal, alive.
- 4Remain aware as the wave moves through you and settles into stillness.
The deeper story
Often misread, this verse is squarely about śakti, not the mechanics of the body. Kashmir Shaivism calls the throb of such moments spanda, the vibration of consciousness; the teaching is that any peak of energy — rightly attended — is a chariot to the same recognition the breath-gap offers quietly.
Terms in this technique
- śakti
- Energy, the dynamic power of consciousness; Devi.
- ānanda
- Bliss; the joy intrinsic to consciousness.
- spanda
- The subtle pulse/vibration of consciousness.
