Waves of the One

As waves are to water, flames to fire, rays to the sun, so all the worlds are waves of you — Bhairava.

The conversation of Devi & Bhairava

A faithful retelling of the dialogue that frames this verse — the Goddess asks, and Bhairava answers with the teaching above. (The śloka is the scripture; the conversation dramatizes its meaning, in English and Hindi.)

देवी · the Goddess

You say all this world is You, Lord. Yet I see countless separate things. How are they not other than You?

Bhairava

As waves are to water, flames to fire, rays to the sun — different in form, never separate in substance. So contemplate every thing and event as a wave of your own awareness.

देवी · the Goddess

So the many are real, yet not a true separation?

Bhairava

Just so. The wave is fully water; differentiation is real as appearance, never as division. See the whole differentiated universe as your own waves — distinct in form, one in essence.

देवी · the Goddess

Then the world is not an illusion to be denied?

Bhairava

Not at all. It is my real self-expression. Rest as the one from which all the waves rise and into which they fall — and you will know the universe as fully myself, as the wave is fully water.

Why it works

Water and its waves, fire and its flames, the sun and its rays are different in form but identical in substance. The verse has you contemplate the entire universe this way — as the waves of your own Bhairava-consciousness. Differentiation is real as appearance yet never a true separation; held thus, the many and the one are recognised as a single reality throwing itself into forms.

How to practice

  1. 1Settle and sense yourself as the deep ground of awareness — like water, like fire, like the sun.
  2. 2Contemplate that every thing and event is a wave of that ground: as waves rise from water, flames from fire, rays from the sun.
  3. 3See the whole differentiated universe as your own waves — distinct in form, never separate in essence.
  4. 4Rest as the one from which all the waves rise and into which they fall.
Practice note. Hold the felt unity, not just the idea: the waves are many and real, yet never anything other than the one awareness rising as them.

The deeper story

This is one of the great non-dual declarations of Kashmir Shaivism (echoed in the Spanda and Pratyabhijñā texts): the universe is not an illusion to be negated but the real self-expression (ābhāsa) of consciousness. The wave is fully water; the world is fully Shiva.
