Frequently Asked Questions

How does the character counter work?+

Just type or paste your text — every metric updates live, with no button. It counts characters (with and without spaces), words, sentences, paragraphs and lines, and computes reading time, speaking time, readability and more instantly in your browser.

Does it count characters with or without spaces?+

Both. The tool shows characters including spaces and characters excluding spaces side by side, because platforms differ — e.g. Twitter/X counts spaces, while some forms count only visible characters.

How is reading time calculated?+

Reading time uses an average silent reading speed of about 225 words per minute; speaking time uses about 130 words per minute. So a 450-word article is roughly a 2-minute read and a 3.5-minute speech.

What is the Flesch Reading Ease score?+

Flesch Reading Ease rates text 0–100 from the average sentence length and syllables per word — higher is easier. 60–70 is plain English; 90+ is very easy; below 30 is very difficult. The tool also shows the matching US grade level and reading age.

How do I check keyword density?+

Type a keyword (or phrase) into the Keywords tab and the tool shows how many times it appears and its density as a percentage of total words. For SEO, a natural 0.5–2.5% is typical; much higher can read as keyword stuffing.

What is the character limit for Twitter/X, LinkedIn and Instagram?+

X/Twitter posts allow 280 characters, Threads 500, LinkedIn posts 3,000, and Instagram and TikTok captions 2,200. The Social limits tab shows a live progress bar for each that turns orange/red as you approach the cap.

What's the ideal meta title and meta description length?+

Aim for about 50–60 characters for a meta title and 140–160 for a meta description so Google doesn't truncate them. The SEO limits tab tracks both with live bars.

Is my text private?+

Yes — completely. All counting and analysis run locally in your browser; your text is never uploaded to any server. Your draft is also auto-saved to your own device so it's restored if you return.

Can I track a writing goal?+

Yes. Set a target word count and the goal tracker shows your progress, percentage complete and words remaining, with a live progress bar — handy for essays, articles and NaNoWriMo-style targets.

Does it detect the language of my text?+

Yes — it auto-detects common languages (English, Hindi, Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and more) from the script and common words, with no upload.

How many words is a 500-character text?+

It depends on word length, but English averages about 5–6 characters per word including the space, so 500 characters is roughly 80–100 words. Paste your text for the exact count — this tool shows both characters and words live.

How many characters are in a word on average?+

English words average about 4.7 letters, or roughly 5–6 characters once you include the trailing space. The tool reports your text's exact average word length under the Case & characters tab.

How long should a blog post be?+

There's no fixed rule, but in-depth posts that rank often run 1,000–2,000+ words. Use the word-goal tracker to hit a target, and the readability score to keep it easy to read while you expand.

What is a good readability score for web content?+

Aim for a Flesch Reading Ease of about 60–70 (‘plain English’, roughly grade 7–8). News and consumer content often targets grade 6–8 so the widest audience can read it comfortably.

Does the counter work for languages other than English?+

Character, word, line and paragraph counts work for any language, and emoji and CJK text are counted correctly using grapheme segmentation. Readability (Flesch) is tuned for English, so treat it as indicative for other languages.

How do I count words without spaces or count only letters?+

The tool shows characters with spaces, characters without spaces, and a full breakdown of letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation and symbols in the Case & characters tab — so you can read whichever number a form or platform requires.

Is this character counter free and without ads in the results?+

Yes — it's free, needs no sign-up, and never inserts ads above your results. The text area stays the focus and the statistics support it.

How many pages is 1,000 words?+

About 2 pages single-spaced or 4 pages double-spaced, at a standard 12pt font (~500 words per single-spaced page). So 250 words ≈ ½ page, 500 ≈ 1 page, 1,500 ≈ 3 pages and 2,000 ≈ 4 pages. The live Pages stat updates as you type.

How many words is a 5-minute speech?+

Roughly 650 words at an average speaking pace of 130 words per minute. So a 3-minute talk is about 390 words and a 10-minute talk about 1,300. Paste your script and the speaking-time estimate updates instantly.

What reading level should I write at?+

For a general web audience, aim for around US grade 7–8 (Flesch Reading Ease 60–70). Lower grades reach more readers; technical or academic writing naturally sits higher. The readability panel shows your grade level and reading age live.

What is vocabulary diversity (type-token ratio)?+

It's the share of unique words out of total words — a quick measure of how varied your vocabulary is. A low ratio in long text can signal repetition; the Keywords tab shows it alongside unique-word count and repeated words.
