Bird Breeding Calculator
From the first courtship duet to the day the last chick weans, this wheel plots all five phases of the breeding cycle for every common pet aviculture species. Pick the species, enter the cycle start date, and the calculator returns the nest-box add date, candling window, hand-rear pull window, and a full intervention schedule aligned to AAV (Association of Avian Veterinarians) and Rosskopf clinical protocols.
Quick Conversion
Formula: weeks = days / 7
Species
Co-incubation; cock takes day shift. Pull for hand-feeding at day 18-21 for tamer companion birds.
Cycle start date
Reality check
Current phase reads Courtship. Provide 14h daylight, full-spectrum lighting, and high-protein conditioning food.
Intervention schedule
Calendar dates calculated from your cycle start. Each card is an AAV-aligned action point.
Provide nesting box with shavings or coconut fibre — species-dimensioned.
Hen will lay 1 egg every 2 day(s) — expect 4-7 total.
Stop nest checks beyond 1 quick check per day. Maintain humidity 50-60 percent.
Check fertility with candler — vein development visible mid-incubation.
Begin egg-food, sprouted seed, and softened pellet daily. No nest disturbance.
Pull chicks for hand-feeding if companion-tameness is the goal. Pull all together.
Chicks leave nest; ensure low perches, no water-bowl drownings, ABV monitoring.
Remove nest box to trigger rest season. Schedule hen for post-breeding vet check.

Courtship
Pair bonding, display, and copulation. Provide privacy and full-spectrum lighting.
Egg-laying
Hen lays one egg every 1-3 days. Calcium and cuttlebone access is critical.
Incubation
Pair sits on eggs. Avoid nest checks beyond once per day. Maintain 25-27 C, 50-60% humidity.
Chick rearing
Parents feed crop milk and regurgitated food. Egg-food, soft food, and sprouted seed daily.
Fledging
Chicks leave nest, learn to fly, and wean. Parents may begin a follow-up clutch.
The formula — AAV cycle composition
total_cycle = courtship + (clutch_mean x lay_interval) + incubation + chick_rearing + fledgingnest_box_day = max(0, courtship - species_offset)hand_rear_day = courtship + laying + incubation + hand_rear_offsetDay counts pulled from the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) clinical references, Rosskopf & Woerpel (2003) avian medicine and surgery, and individual species AAV proceedings papers. For Cockatiel the wheel plots 14 + 11 + 20 + 35 + 14 = 94 days from courtship onset to fully weaned chicks.
Conditioning food checklist
- Egg-food (yolk + breadcrumb + grated carrot) for breeding pair daily from courtship onset
- Cuttlebone, mineral block, oyster shell ad libitum throughout cycle
- Sprouted millet, oats, mung bean (probiotic-supportive) refreshed 2x daily
- Full-spectrum UVB lighting 10-12 hours per day for vitamin D3 synthesis
- Photoperiod 14L:10D triggers breeding; 10L:14D triggers rest
Red flags requiring vet
- Hen fluffed at cage bottom with tail-bobbing — egg-binding, 4-6h emergency
- Egg-laying outside cycle (chronic egg-laying syndrome)
- Cock aggression to hen drawing blood — separate immediately
- Chicks with empty crop > 4 hours after expected feed — parental rejection
- Splay-leg deformity — reposition substrate, vet within 24 hours
- Stuck egg-tooth past expected hatch + 24h — assisted hatch

Trusted by breeders & avian vets
“I run the wheel side by side with my breeding journal — the calendar markers for synchronised setting match the protocol I have used for three decades. Now my apprentices can read the same plan.”
“I screen-cap this for clients planning their first parrot pair. The intervention timeline — nest box add date, hand-rear pull date, fledging support — matches AAV recommendations and prevents the common errors I see.”
“Switching between Gouldians and green-cheek conures means juggling two completely different timelines. The species switch on the wheel beats my paper calendar — and the cockatoo emergency-exit reminder once saved a hen.”
“For surrendered breeding pairs we use the wheel to assess where in the cycle they were stopped. The nest-box-removal timing matches my behaviourist's rest-season protocol, and adopters see it on the rehoming sheet.”
