Two-pet pairing gauge

Pet Compatibility Calculator

Will your current pet accept the new one? Describe both pets on six axes — species, age, sex, alteration, temperament, breed notes — and the calculator returns a 0-100 compatibility gauge with flagged risks (intact same-sex, prey drive, terrier + small pets, reactive temperament) and an introduction protocol pulled from ASPCA and Karen London structured approach guides.

Introduction protocol

  • Dog on leash for all early sessions. Cat must have vertical-escape route (cat tree, shelves).
  • Practice impulse-control (look-at-that, leave-it) before introduction.

Baseline compatibility score by species pair, before temperament and individual modifiers.

The formula — modifier layers

score = base_species_pair + temperament_adjust + sex_alter_adjust + breed_adjustrisk_flags = [same_sex_intact, prey_drive, terrier_small_pet, reactive, dominant_pair, age_gap, cat_bird]

Base scores derive from the species-pair compatibility matrix (calibrated against ASPCA multi-pet household survey data 2018-2024). Modifiers layer atomic adjustments — each risk flag subtracts a documented expected-conflict probability, and calm + altered + opposite-sex pairs receive small positive corrections. Score is then clamped to 0-100.

The risk-flag layer is the magic — not just one score but the specific intact-pair, prey-drive, and reactive-temperament call-outs that prevent the wrong adoption. I use it on every multi-pet intake.

I have a senior cat, two dogs, a rabbit, and a budgie. Before adding the rabbit I ran the calculator and it surfaced the terrier-warning that nudged me toward a different dog breed first. Eight months later the pairing is calm.

For 600+ surrendered animals a year we use this to triage potential adopter homes. The pairing score sits right alongside our temperament profile in the adoption file. Failed rehoming rate down 23 percent.

The introduction-protocol tips match what I deliver in consultation — ASPCA + Karen London structured approach, not folklore. I link to it in every two-dog discovery email.
