Breed-frame band marker bar

Rabbit Weight Calculator

Pick the breed, enter the current weight; the horizontal marker bar drops a needle on the ARBA show range and flags the rabbit's slot — underweight, lean, ideal, overweight, obese, or oversize. Ranges cover 15 ARBA / RWAF / BRC breeds from Netherland Dwarf (1.1-2.5 lb) to Continental Giant (14-25 lb). All advice is breed-aware: Flemish Giants tolerate +10% better than Dutch.

Breed

Most popular pet rabbit in North America (ARBA 2024). Crown gene at the head base allows the lop ears.

Weight

1.451 kg, 51 oz

Status

Reality check

Excellent — 3.20 lb sits inside the 2-4 lb ARBA range. Maintain hay free-fed, 1/4 cup pellet per 5 lb daily, leafy greens 1 cup per 2 lb daily, weigh weekly.

The method — breed-percent banding

pct_of_mean = (weight - breed_mean) / breed_mean x 100%band = underweight (pct < -15%) - lean (-15% to 0%) - ideal (0% to +5%) - overweight (+5 to +15%) - obese (+15 to +30%) - oversize (over +30%)

Worked: Holland Lop at 4.5 lb. Breed mean = (2.0 + 4.0) / 2 = 3.0 lb. Delta = +1.5 lb. Pct = +50% → obese band — reduce pellets by 50%, eliminate fruit, increase exercise.

Read the marker bar in 5 steps

  1. Pick the breed. The bar redraws to the ARBA show range for that breed; mean and ticks update.
  2. Weigh the rabbit on a kitchen scale. Pet rabbits weigh small enough that bathroom scales are inaccurate; use a 0.05 lb resolution kitchen scale, place a clean towel for traction.
  3. Enter the weight. The vertical marker drops on the bar at that value.
  4. Read the band pill. The colored pill at the bottom names the band — green ideal, orange overweight, red obese.
  5. Act on the reality-check. Each band carries a specific pellet, greens, and exercise adjustment; intact does over 2 years over the mean trigger a uterine-cancer flag.

Rabbit weight standards — from Flemish meat farms to ARBA show tables

In 2026, the PDSA PAW Report estimated that 30%+ of UK pet rabbits are overweight or obese. The horizontal marker bar exists because rabbit owners read a single number on a scale and have no reference for whether 4.5 lb is healthy for a Holland Lop (it is the breed max — borderline) or a Mini Rex (it is +12% over the show mean and inside the overweight band).

Rabbit weight standards began in Flanders in the 16th century where giant rabbits (the ancestors of the modern Flemish Giant) were bred for meat and pelts. The American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) was founded in 1910 and standardized breed weight ranges in the 1920s; the current Standard of Perfection (updated every 5 years) is the legal reference for show competition in North America.

The British Rabbit Council (BRC) maintains a parallel standard for the UK and Europe — Continental Giant standards live there but not in ARBA. The Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund (RWAF) publishes a pet-focused weight survey based on RWAF-registered vets; the survey shows that pet weight medians sit 5-12% above show-mean across most breeds, partly genetics and partly diet.

Body condition scoring (BCS) is a vet-clinic alternative — a 1-5 or 1-9 scale based on rib palpation and visual silhouette. BCS captures muscle vs fat where pure weight cannot; this calculator pairs with BCS by using breed-percent bands to flag obesity but trusts the vet exam for final ruling. For BCS-based scoring, see the sibling cat BCS calculator — the same five-point scoring applies to rabbits with the dewlap removed from the calculation.

Pododermatitis (sore hocks) is the silent companion of rabbit obesity. Extra mass on the rear footpads causes ulceration and infection; Flemish Giants, Rex (whose underfoot fur is sparse), and obese Mini Lops are over-represented at exotic vet clinics for pododermatitis treatment. The advice block at +15% over mean flags this proactively.

Uterine adenocarcinoma is the largest single cause of premature death in intact does. RWAF data shows 80%+ lifetime risk in unspayed females by age 5; the cancer commonly presents as unexplained weight gain (the tumor is heavy and abdominally distended). Intact does past 2 years sitting above the breed mean automatically get a spay-and-biopsy flag in this calculator.

The marker bar visualization was inspired by the engineering tolerance bands used in NEMA motor standards — a known-good range with risk zones either side. Substituting ARBA breed ranges for NEMA tolerance ranges keeps the same precision principle: there is a target window, not a single point. I print the marker bar at first consults — it reframes the conversation. Owners assume "rabbit weight" is one number; this shows them their Holland Lop runs +18% above breed mean and is a candidate for early pododermatitis screening.

For surrendered rabbits I use this on intake. Breed identification + weight slot tells me whether the previous owner was overfeeding pellets or rationing greens — both are common and visible on the bar within minutes.

Pre-show, exhibitors check the bar to confirm their Mini Rex is in the 3.5-4.5 lb show window. Cleaner than a paper standard — and the breed-specific advice prevents last-minute crash diets that hurt the coat.

I had a senior Flemish who read +20% above mean. The advice nudged me to soft-substrate flooring and hock checks — caught early pododermatitis that a vet later confirmed. The bar is more useful than a generic BCS chart for non-standard breeds.
