IST = caller_local_time - caller_UTC_offset + UTC+5:30Worked: 09:00 EDT, caller offset -4 -> UTC 13:00 -> IST 18:30 (6:30 PM). 09:00 BST, caller offset +1 -> UTC 08:00 -> IST 13:30 (1:30 PM). The Intl.DateTimeFormat API handles the offset lookup automatically per IANA TZDB.
How to use the call-window scanner
- 1Pick your origin from the dropdown - the IANA identifier determines DST handling.
- 2Read the 24-hour ribbon. Green = ideal, lime = good, amber = edge, slate = avoid.
- 3Click a square to focus the split-globe and inspect day/night on both sides.
- 4Pick from top auto-picks - three guaranteed-ideal recurring slots are highlighted below.
- 5Save to history for fast recall and paste into your calendar.
Why a call-window scanner exists in 2026
In 2026, a San Francisco product manager scheduling a thrice-weekly standup with a Bengaluru engineering pod needs a slot that doesn't require either side to dial in past midnight. This calculator exists to make that scheduling decision in one click.
Calling India from elsewhere on Earth has been a fundamentally asymmetric proposition since the Indian Standard Time meridian was set at 82.5 degrees east at the Madras (now Chennai) Observatory in 1906. India sits one full hemisphere away from North America and one half-hemisphere from Europe, which means a generous chunk of every working day for any global team falls during Indian sleep hours. The job of this calculator is to find the narrow but reliable overlap windows where both sides are awake, alert, and at their desks.
The Indian working day in the IT services and BPO industry runs longer than most: 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM IST is the typical hard window, with 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM the most common core overlap. After 7:00 PM the ‘Eastern shift’ teams come online, working until roughly 2:00 AM IST. After midnight, only on-call and incident-bridge staff are awake. The Indian government and labour codes recognise 9 PM as the limit for default working hours; calls past that point should be voluntary, agreed in advance, and rotation-based.
From the US East Coast (New York, Boston, Washington DC, Atlanta), the best call window from Monday morning is 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM EDT (5:00 PM to 9:00 PM IST), which catches Indian colleagues in the last 90 minutes to 3 hours of their working day. From the US West Coast (San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle), the same overlap shifts to 4:30 AM to 8:30 AM PDT - much earlier, and many West Coast teams instead use the reverse window of 9:30 PM PDT to 11:30 PM PDT, which hits 10:00 AM IST the next day.
From London (GMT or BST), the overlap is exceptionally clean: India is only 4.5 to 5.5 hours ahead, which means the entire UK 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM window maps neatly to 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM IST. London is the easiest major business capital from which to coordinate India, which is partly why London consulting and legal firms ran the heaviest pre-pandemic offshoring relationships with Mumbai and Bengaluru.
Daylight Saving Time, which the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand all observe at different dates, complicates the math. India does not observe DST. The Indian government considered DST during the 1962 Sino-Indian war and the 1971 Bangladesh war and rejected it both times because India's near-equatorial latitude makes the daylight gain marginal. This calculator therefore handles all DST shifts on the caller side automatically using the IANA Time Zone Database identifiers - America/New_York, Europe/London, Australia/Sydney, and so on.
Voice and video quality in India-to-anywhere calls has scaled dramatically since the launch of Reliance Jio in 2016, which collapsed mobile data costs and pushed video meetings (Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Webex) past 60% of all professional cross-border calls by 2023. WhatsApp video remains the dominant family-call channel for the 32 million-strong Indian diaspora. Both channels rely on the timezone overlap windows this page identifies - tools cannot fix the math of waking your mother at 3 AM in Pune.
The IANA Time Zone Database, maintained collaboratively at iana.org/time-zones, encodes DST rules for every region on Earth, including India's 1906 standardisation, the 1942-1945 wartime offsets in many countries, the US 2007 DST extension, and Russia's repeated DST flip-flops (2011, 2014). The dual-clock scanner on this page uses the browser's built-in Intl.DateTimeFormat with these identifiers, so each year-round and DST shift is handled without manual updates.
Used by global teams scheduling India calls
“I used to keep a spreadsheet of ‘safe call hours’ for our Mumbai team. The green-band call-window scanner replaced it. Now my engineering managers just pick a green slot and book it - zero math.”
“Seattle is the worst US zone for India scheduling because their morning is our evening. The Pacific-Time green band on this page is the single artefact I send to new account managers. Bookmark gold.”
“I call my mother three times a week. I've woken her up at 3 AM more than once. This page's sun/moon indicator over the IST clock means I now never accidentally call past her bedtime.”
“The 24-hour ribbon makes our handoff schedule self-explanatory. New hires don't need a 30-minute explainer about IST; they just look at the green band and know when the other side is awake.”
