The formula
IST = EST + 10h 30m (winter, UTC-5)IST = EDT + 9h 30m (summer DST, UTC-4)Worked: EST 09:00 + 10:30 = 19:30 = 7:30 PM IST same day. EDT 09:00 + 9:30 = 18:30 = 6:30 PM IST same day. The NYSE open at 9:30 AM EDT lands at 7:00 PM IST.
Five steps to schedule an NYC-Mumbai call
- Pick the EST hour. Enter the Eastern wall-clock hour (0-23) you propose.
- Add the minute. NYSE-style calls open on 9:30, but any minute works.
- Confirm DST. The NYC skyline card auto-tags EDT vs EST so you do not have to guess.
- Read the IST label. The result shows the IST time and whether it crosses to the next day in India.
- Save the slot. Click Save to keep the conversion in your local history for the next steering committee.
From the 1918 Standard Time Act to the BSE-NYSE relay
Eastern Standard Time (UTC-5) and Eastern Daylight Time (UTC-4) cover the densest stretch of US commerce - New York, Washington DC, Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Philadelphia, and the financial corridor that runs from the New York Stock Exchange to the SEC. The zone was formally established by the Standard Time Act of 1918, signed by Woodrow Wilson on 19 March of that year. Before 1918 New York operated on its own city time, anchored to local solar noon at City Hall, which made cross-state railroad timetables a clerical nightmare.
The New York Stock Exchange opens at 9:30 AM ET and closes at 4:00 PM ET, a window that determines an enormous fraction of global financial-market activity. When the NYSE bell rings at 9:30 AM EDT, Mumbai's BSE is already two and a half hours past its 3:30 PM IST close; the gap pushes most US-India equity arbitrage into the overlap window between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM IST (8:30 AM to 11:30 AM EDT). The 10.5-hour difference, or 9.5 hours during DST, is therefore not just an academic timezone fact - it actively shapes how cross-listed ADRs and Indian IT sector tickers behave intraday.
Indian Standard Time was established in 1906 at the Madras (now Chennai) Observatory by the British colonial administration. The chosen meridian, 82.5 degrees east, lies near Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh and yields the offset UTC+5:30. Before that date the major Indian cities ran on three separate civil times - Bombay Time (UTC+4:51), Madras Time (UTC+5:21), and Calcutta Time (UTC+5:53) - which the Great Indian Peninsula Railway begged the administration to unify. Burma was carved off in 1937 onto UTC+6:30. Pakistan and Bangladesh later took UTC+5 and UTC+6 after independence in 1947 and 1971.
Daylight Saving Time, the source of the EDT-vs-EST distinction, was popularised by the New Zealand entomologist George Hudson in 1895 and by the English builder William Willett in 1907. Germany adopted it on 30 April 1916 to save coal during the First World War. The US followed in 1918, repealed it in 1919, and only made it permanent again under the Uniform Time Act of 1966. The most recent change came with the 2007 Energy Policy Act, which extended DST to start on the second Sunday of March and end on the first Sunday of November - the schedule still in use in 2026.
India never adopted DST. The Indian government considered it briefly during the 1962 Sino-Indian war and again during the 1971 Bangladesh war, but concluded that India's near-equatorial latitude provides almost the same daylight every day of the year, so shifting clocks would yield little benefit and considerable disruption to the railways and schools. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics now maintains the IST signal using a network of caesium-fountain clocks at the National Physical Laboratory in New Delhi, traceable to international atomic time UTC.
The India-US technology corridor has scaled in lockstep with the EST-to-IST timezone bridge. The Y2K remediation programme of 1998-2000 forced US Eastern banks and insurers to lean heavily on Indian engineering capacity, and the resulting offshoring relationships became permanent. Companies like Infosys, TCS, Wipro, HCL, Cognizant, Tech Mahindra, and Mphasis now run dedicated ‘Eastern shift’ teams that overlap with New York mornings - a shift that traditionally runs 5:00 PM to 2:00 AM IST (7:30 AM to 4:30 PM EST). Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, and Citi all maintain large Bengaluru and Hyderabad operations centres that handle the East-coast trading day.
Modern timezone software, including the dual clocks on this page, draws on the IANA Time Zone Database (TZDB), founded by Arthur David Olson at NIH in 1986 and now maintained collaboratively at iana.org/time-zones. The identifiers America/New_York and Asia/Kolkata encode every DST rule change going back to 1880, including 1918, 1942 (US War Time), 1966, 1986, 2007, and beyond. Every Linux, macOS, iOS, Android, and modern browser ships a copy and updates it as governments change rules - which they do roughly twice a year somewhere in the world.
Used by NYC fintech teams, Gurgaon BPO managers, NRI students, and consulting partners
“My team runs the East-coast shift (5 PM to 2 AM IST). The NYC-Mumbai dual clock with the NYSE-open marker is exactly what my shift leads need to spot the start-of-business window in real time. Bookmarked across the floor.”
“I've been doing EST-IST math in my head for 11 years and still get DST wrong half the time. The auto-DST detection and the 24-hour overlap table mean my client-success leads stop double-checking and just trust the page.”
“I call my parents three times a week. Knowing if it's already past 11 PM in Pune was always a guess. The sun/moon indicator on the IST clock is brilliantly simple - I now never wake them up by accident.”
“We schedule weekly steering committees across NYC, London, and Bengaluru. This page handles the New York leg cleanly and the call-slot presets match exactly how our delivery managers pick meeting times.”
