Central Standard Time (UTC-6) and Central Daylight Time (UTC-5) anchor the United States' middle belt: Chicago, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Memphis, New Orleans, Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, Nashville (most of Tennessee), and much of the Mississippi corridor. The zone was formalised by the Standard Time Act of 1918, signed by Woodrow Wilson on 19 March of that year. Before 1918 each Midwestern city ran on a local solar time anchored to its own city hall - a clerical nightmare that the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and the Illinois Central Railroad both lobbied Congress to end.

The Chicago Board of Trade, founded in 1848, and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, formed in 1898 as the Chicago Butter and Egg Board, anchor much of the world's grain, energy, and short-rate trading. The CBOT pit historically opened at 8:30 AM CST for grain futures - now 7:00 AM CT for electronic Globex - and the equity-index futures roll on a 23-hour Globex schedule. A trader watching corn or eurodollar futures from a Chicago screen needs an Indian counterpart who can monitor the same risk in IST hours, which is exactly why Mumbai's CME-affiliated brokerage desks now run dedicated Chicago shifts overlapping 6:30 PM to 11:30 PM IST.

Indian Standard Time was established in 1906 at the Madras (now Chennai) Observatory by the British colonial administration. The meridian chosen, 82.5 degrees east, runs through Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh and gives the offset UTC+5:30. Before 1906 the major Indian cities ran on three separate civil times: Bombay Time (UTC+4:51, anchored to the Bombay Observatory at Colaba), Madras Time (UTC+5:21, the Madras Observatory itself), and Calcutta Time (UTC+5:53, anchored to the Calcutta Meridian). The Great Indian Peninsular Railway begged the colonial administration to unify these because of repeated timetable failures.

Daylight Saving Time, which is the source of the CST-versus-CDT distinction, was popularised by the New Zealand entomologist George Hudson in 1895 and by the English builder William Willett in 1907. Germany adopted DST first on 30 April 1916 to save coal during the First World War. The US followed in 1918, repealed it in 1919, briefly reintroduced ‘War Time’ in 1942, and only made it permanent under the Uniform Time Act of 1966. The most recent change came with the 2007 Energy Policy Act, which extended DST to start on the second Sunday of March and end on the first Sunday of November - the schedule still in use in 2026.

India never adopted DST. The Indian government considered it briefly during the 1962 Sino-Indian war and again during the 1971 Bangladesh war but concluded that India's near-equatorial latitude provides almost the same daylight every day, so shifting clocks would yield little benefit and considerable disruption to the railways, schools, and ports. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics now maintains the IST signal using a network of caesium-fountain clocks at the National Physical Laboratory in New Delhi, traceable to international atomic time UTC.

The Chicago-India technology corridor has scaled in lockstep with the offshore-IT industry. United Airlines, Boeing, McDonald's, Walgreens, Allstate, State Farm, Caterpillar, Kraft Heinz, and Mondelez all maintain large Indian engineering and BPO operations because of the natural Chicago morning to Mumbai evening overlap. Companies like Infosys, TCS, Wipro, HCL, Cognizant, Tech Mahindra, and Mphasis run dedicated ‘Central shift’ teams that overlap with Chicago mornings - traditionally 6:30 PM to 3:30 AM IST (8:00 AM to 5:00 PM CDT). The Chicago Mercantile Exchange itself runs a Bengaluru technology centre that handles a substantial portion of CME Globex platform engineering on follow-the-sun rotation.

Modern timezone software, including the dual clocks on this page, draws on the IANA Time Zone Database (TZDB), founded by Arthur David Olson at the National Institutes of Health in 1986 and now maintained collaboratively at iana.org/time-zones. The identifiers America/Chicago and Asia/Kolkata encode every DST rule change going back to 1880, including the 1918 Standard Time Act, the 1942-1945 War Time period, the 1966 Uniform Time Act, the 1986 amendments, and the 2007 Energy Policy Act extensions. Every Linux, macOS, iOS, Android, and modern browser ships a copy and updates it as governments change rules.
