Why 14 days is the most-used business cycle on earth

In 2026, an HR specialist in Bengaluru needs to email the next payroll-close date to every new hire — and she needs it today, on the spot, with the correct weekday so the runbook copy doesn't need editing later. The 14-day projection is fastest when she can type a date and read a target without scrolling a calendar app.

The 14-day cycle is older than most calendars suspect. The Roman week was eight days (nundinae); the early Christian week settled on seven; combining two weeks gave us the fortnight, a word recorded in Old English as "feowertyne niht" — fourteen nights. The Norse skipped the term and counted by full moons. In British and Australian English, fortnightly is still the dominant word for biweekly payroll.

Biweekly payroll took off in the United States after the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, which let employers pay on any cycle of 31 days or less. Twenty-six pay periods divide evenly into a 52-week year, simplifying tax withholding and benefit accruals. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports 43% of US private-sector firms use the bi-weekly cycle, more than any other.

Bi-weekly mortgages emerged in the 1980s when lenders realized that 26 half-payments equal 13 monthly payments per year — one extra principal payment that compounds over 30 years into a 4-6 year reduction in payoff. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) regulates how these are marketed because some third-party servicers charge setup fees for an arrangement borrowers can self-administer.

Agile software adopted the 14-day cadence under Scrum. The Scrum Guide names a 1-4 week sprint window, but 2 weeks dominates because it's long enough to ship something meaningful and short enough that planning errors are caught early. Jeff Sutherland and Ken Schwaber formalized Scrum in 1995; the 2-week sprint is the default in JIRA, Linear, Azure DevOps, and almost every PM tool that ships today.

ACH banking in the United States uses 14 days as the reversal window: an originator can reverse an erroneous credit within 5 banking days but disputes can stretch to 14 calendar days under NACHA Operating Rules. Knowing the 14-day target from a payment date lets treasury teams calendar the close-of-dispute date precisely.

ISO 8601 published 1988, and the underlying Gregorian calendar of 1582, anchor every modern date-arithmetic library. JavaScript's Date.setDate() handles month and year roll-over correctly per ECMA-262 §21.4, so adding 14 days never lands on Feb 30 or June 31 — those dates simply don't exist, and the engine cascades to July 1 or March 2 automatically.
