Forty-five days: the six-week sprint and the IRS clock

In 2026, a project manager in Manchester opens a Q3 PMO kickoff deck. Six-week sprints are the standard at the company; she needs to know what Sunday looks like for the launch demo and whether to push it to Friday. The Gantt widget answers in one glance — and the math behind it is older than the sprint cadence itself.

Henry Gantt, an American mechanical engineer trained at Stevens Institute, developed the bar-chart project visualization in the 1910s. His work with Frederick Winslow Taylor on scientific management produced what we now call the Gantt chart — a horizontal timeline with stacked bars representing tasks. The U.S. Army Ordnance Department adopted it for WWI munitions scheduling; the Hoover Dam (1931-1936) was managed with Gantt charts; modern Microsoft Project, Asana, and Linear all descend from his original.

The 45-day sprint emerged from PMBOK and PRINCE2 frameworks as the natural mid-size project length. Two-week agile sprints handle small features; quarterly OKR cycles handle strategy; the 45-day sprint sits in the middle, perfect for shipping a substantial feature or completing a discrete phase. Three 2-week sprints (42 days) plus a 3-day release window equals 45.

The IRS §1031 45-day rule is the most consequential 45-day deadline in US business. Real-estate investors selling a property can defer capital-gains tax by acquiring a like-kind property. The taxpayer has 45 calendar days from the sale closing to identify (in writing, by physical address or legal description) up to three candidate replacement properties. The 180-day completion clock runs concurrently. Missing day 45 by even one day collapses the deferral. There are no extensions, no weekend rollovers, no excuses.

Enterprise SaaS contracts commonly use 45-day cure windows. The Customer notifies the Vendor of a material breach in writing; if the Vendor fails to cure within 45 calendar days, the Customer may terminate the agreement for cause. Salesforce, AWS, ServiceNow, and Workday master service agreements all reference 45 days. The reason: 45 days is long enough for a vendor to mount a serious cure effort but short enough that a wronged customer isn't left in limbo.

EU public procurement uses 45-day windows in Directive 2014/24/EU. The minimum time limit for receipt of tenders in an open procedure is 35 days, extended to 45 days when the contract is "particularly complex". Mirror provisions exist in UK retained EU law and Indian GeM e-procurement.

Construction FEED reviews (Front-End Engineering Design) typically run 45 days for mid-size oil and gas projects. The 45-day review window gives stakeholders enough time to scrutinize Class-3 cost estimates, P&ID diagrams, and process safety reviews per AIChE's CCPS guidelines.
