St Valentine was a 3rd-century Roman priest beheaded on the Flaminian Way on 14 February c. 270 AD by Emperor Claudius II Gothicus. Several Valentines were martyred on the same date — the Bollandist hagiographers count three distinct St Valentines in the Acta Sanctorum. The feast day was formally established by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD to replace the older pagan Lupercalia festival (which the Romans celebrated 13-15 February).
The romantic association is medieval, not Roman. Geoffrey Chaucer's 1382 poem 'Parlement of Foules' is the earliest surviving text linking Valentine's Day with courtly love and bird-pairing: 'For this was on Seynt Valentyne's day / Whan euery foul cometh ther to chese his make'. Chaucer wrote it to commemorate the engagement of Richard II to Anne of Bohemia. The 14 February-as-romance tradition spread through the European courts of the 15th-17th centuries.
The first commercial Valentine card was printed by Esther Howland (Worcester, Massachusetts) in 1849 from English imported lace and ribbon — she ran a workshop of young women hand-assembling embossed-paper cards. Howland died in 1904; Hallmark mass-printed cards from 1913. The first valentine printed on US currency-grade paper sold for USD 6 in 1855 — equivalent to USD 220 in 2026 dollars.
