The formula

EST = IST - 10h 30m (winter, NYC at UTC-5)EDT = IST - 9h 30m (summer DST, NYC at UTC-4)

Worked: IST 09:00 - 10:30 = -1:30 = 10:30 PM EST the previous day. IST 09:00 - 9:30 = -0:30 = 11:30 PM EDT the previous day. For any IST morning time, the NYC date is one day earlier.

Five steps from Mumbai IST to NYC EST

  1. Enter the IST hour in 24-hour format. India runs on UTC+5:30 year-round.
  2. Enter the IST minute - half-hour values are common because IST itself is half-hour offset.
  3. Read the EDT or EST badge on the NYC harbor card; it updates automatically.
  4. Read the Eastern result - the label says whether the date rolls back to the previous day.
  5. Save the snapshot for quick recall across the trading or shift schedule.

From the Madras Observatory to a Mumbai-NYC trading desk

In May 2026, an NRI parent in Brooklyn juggling weekly calls to elderly parents in Pune and a portfolio analyst in midtown Manhattan coordinating earnings calls with the Mumbai sell-side both need the same number: how does Mumbai 9:30 AM IST map onto New York time, today, including DST. The IANA Time Zone Database gives the answer twice a year: 11:00 PM the previous evening during Eastern Standard Time (UTC-5, early November to mid-March) and 12:00 midnight at the start of the previous day during Eastern Daylight Time (UTC-4, mid-March to early November). This calculator captures both modes on a live dual landmark scene.

Indian Standard Time has held the offset UTC+5:30 since 1 September 1906, when the colonial administration formally adopted the 82.5 degree east meridian at the Madras Observatory. The Observatory itself, founded in 1786 by the British East India Company and operated through the nineteenth century by John Goldingham, Thomas Glanville Taylor, and Norman Robert Pogson, had already produced the first systematic Indian star catalog and the first chronometer rates for the Indian Ocean trade. The 1906 unification eliminated the Bombay-Calcutta time confusion that had plagued the new Indian Railways since 1853. India today maintains its master IST signal through the National Physical Laboratory in Delhi via cesium-beam atomic clocks synced to UTC.

Eastern Standard Time was anchored to the 75 degree west meridian by the same 1883 American railroad convention - The Day of Two Noons of 18 November 1883 - that created Pacific, Mountain, and Central. The Standard Time Act of 1918, signed by President Woodrow Wilson during the First World War, made it federal US law. New York City, Washington DC, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Miami, and Toronto all operate on Eastern Time (IANA identifier America/New_York). The 75th meridian was chosen because it runs almost exactly through Philadelphia and through the Susquehanna - centering the populated US east coast inside one neat zone.

Daylight Saving Time was first proposed by George Hudson (1895, New Zealand) for evening insect collecting and pushed in Britain by William Willett's 1907 pamphlet The Waste of Daylight. Germany was the first national adopter on 30 April 1916 to conserve coal during the war. The current US rule - second Sunday of March to first Sunday of November - was set by the 2005 Energy Policy Act, taking effect in 2007. Under that rule, Eastern Daylight Time (UTC-4) is active from mid-March to early November, making the IST-to-EST gap 9.5 hours during EDT and 10.5 hours during EST.

The Mumbai-to-NYC working relationship runs deep into financial services. Tata Consultancy Services has operated a midtown Manhattan presence since 1979; Infosys opened its NYC office in 1987; Wipro followed in 1995. By 2026, Indian IT and BPO exports to the United States are estimated by NASSCOM at USD 250 billion annually, with the bulk going to East-Coast investment banks, asset managers, and Fortune 500 headquarters. Mumbai is also a Tier-1 financial center in its own right - the Bombay Stock Exchange opened in 1875, predating both the New York and Tokyo exchanges - and Mumbai trading hours (9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST) almost exactly mirror NYC pre-market plus opening hours in EDT terms.

The IANA Time Zone Database, created by Arthur David Olson at the US National Institutes of Health in 1986, encodes every historical rule change for both zones - including the 1947 partition that separated Indian and Pakistani offsets, the 1996 elimination of New York Daylight Time edge cases, and the 2007 US DST extension. The IANA identifiers Asia/Kolkata for IST and America/New_York for Eastern carry the full rule history. This tool consults the same database through the browser's Intl.DateTimeFormat API, which guarantees DST correctness even on rule changes mid-year.

Modern Mumbai-NYC remote operations - whether at a hedge fund covering Indian large-caps, a Big Four audit team running an Indian subsidiary engagement, or a startup with founders split between Bandra and Brooklyn - rely on a 9.5 to 10.5 hour mental model. When a midtown analyst signs off at 6 PM EDT, the Mumbai team is already at 3:30 AM IST asleep. When the Mumbai team logs on at 9 AM IST, NYC is at 11:30 PM EDT the previous day. The narrow overlap window - typically 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM EDT mapped to 6 PM to 8 PM IST - is the daily transfer zone, and this calculator was designed to make that window unambiguous.

I publish India macro notes to East-coast PMs every morning. The IST-to-EST tool is bookmarked on my second monitor and the live EDT/EST badge means I never miss the daylight saving switch. The conversion table for round IST hours is exactly the lookup I use to time the publication.

When the NYC ETL pipeline alerts at 3 AM ET, my Hyderabad shift needs to know whether the on-call there is awake. The live Statue of Liberty card with the night moon icon is a one-glance answer. Saved snapshots in localStorage are a small touch that I use every shift.

Sunday morning calls to my parents in Pune are sacred. The IST clock with the dusk Mumbai harbor scene tells me at a glance whether 6 PM IST is too late. Combined with the Brooklyn card the timing is unambiguous. Conversion table for 7 PM IST is what I use the most.
