Why Seconds-to-Time Exists — From Babylon to NIST
In 2026, a broadcast technician at a live-event truck imports a SMPTE 12M timecode clip that says "3672 s remaining until cue-out" and needs the producer to hear "one hour, one minute, twelve seconds" — not a raw second count. The conversion is the bridge between machine integers and human shift-talk. This tool exists so you do not have to mod-arithmetic in your head.
The 60-second minute is a Babylonian sexagesimal inheritance from ~1800 BCE. Clay tablets from Old Babylonian Nippur (Yale YBC 7289 et al.) record arithmetic in base-60 because 60 has twelve divisors — easy fractions on a base-60 abacus.
