24-Hour to 12-Hour Time Converter
To convert 24-hour military time to 12-hour AM/PM time, subtract 12 from any hour 13 or higher and label PM; hours 0-11 are AM (with 0 displayed as 12 AM). This tool shows both formats simultaneously on twin analog clock faces — military on the left, civilian AM/PM on the right — with synchronized hands.

Formula
if H24 == 0 → 12:MM AMif 1 ≤ H24 ≤ 11 → H24:MM AMif H24 == 12 → 12:MM PMif 13 ≤ H24 ≤ 23 → (H24 − 12):MM PMWorked: H24 = 15, MM = 30. Since 13 ≤ 15 ≤ 23: H12 = 15 − 12 = 3, period = PM, minute unchanged. Result: 3:30 PM. Military: 1530Z.
How to Use the Twin Clock Converter
- Set the 24-hour value using either the slider, the number input, or a milestone preset chip. Hour ranges 0-23, minute 0-59.
- Watch both clock faces sync — the left (24-hour) hand sweeps the full 360° once per day; the right (12-hour) hand sweeps it twice and updates the AM/PM badge.
- Read the digital readouts below each face: ISO 8601 HH:MM on the left, civilian H:MM AM/PM on the right, with NATO Zulu notation as a hover hint.
- Save the conversion with the Save button — it persists into per-tool localStorage so you can revisit shift patterns or recurring meeting times.
- Round-trip via the conversion table for common milestones (00:00 midnight, 12:00 noon, 17:00 close of business) without re-entering values.
A Brief History of the 12-Hour and 24-Hour Clock
In 2026, a charge nurse at a Level-1 trauma center documenting 03:14 administration of vasopressors next to a parent asking when school pickup at "3 fifteen" happens is the friction this tool exists for. Medical, military, and aviation domains adopted 24-hour notation precisely because the AM/PM bifurcation kills patients and aircraft. Civilian life kept 12-hour because pocket watches did. This calculator bridges the two without losing accuracy.
The mechanical clock appeared in European monastery bell towers in the late 14th century — Salisbury Cathedral's clock (1386) is the oldest surviving working mechanism. Its dial showed 12 hours because that's what medieval Latin distinguished as "hora" in monastic Liturgy of the Hours: matins, lauds, prime, terce, sext, none, vespers, compline. The 12-hour face was theological before it was technical.
The 24-hour notation entered civil use during the French Revolution when the National Convention briefly adopted decimal time (1793-1795): 10 hours per day, 100 minutes per hour, 100 seconds per minute. That experiment failed in 18 months — too disruptive to pocket-watch infrastructure — but it planted the seed for continental Europe's eventual return to 24-hour military and rail notation in the 1880s. See our military-time tool for the modern aviation extension.
NIST timekeeping — the National Institute of Standards and Technology operates WWV (Fort Collins, Colorado), WWVB (60 kHz LF radio sync to atomic clocks), and WWVH (Hawaii) broadcasting UTC time in 24-hour format 24/7. Every wall clock with the "atomic" label syncs to WWVB's 24-hour signal. NIST F-2 cesium fountain (2014) drifts under 1 second in 300 million years. The 12-hour vs 24-hour question is independent of the underlying time scale.
ISO 8601:2019 codifies the 24-hour notation internationally — HH:MM:SS with a leading T separator (2026-05-27T15:30:00Z). The standard explicitly forbids AM/PM in machine-readable timestamps. Database engines (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server), programming languages (Python datetime, Java LocalDateTime, JavaScript Date), and file formats (JSON, XML, CSV) all default to 24-hour. The 12-hour notation persists only in human-facing displays.
Military time follows NATO STANAG 1071 — Standardization Agreement on time formats. Hours 0000-2359 written without a colon, followed by a single letter time-zone code: Z=Zulu (UTC), A=Alpha (UTC+1), L=Local. The 1971 standard remains in force across NATO and most allied militaries. Israeli, Indian, and Japanese defense forces use compatible variants. Use the convertor below to verify your shift starts at 1430Z = 2:30 PM local.
EU 24-hour adoption (1985) — the European Commission directive 85/374/EEC mandated 24-hour notation for all official EU documents, transport schedules, and public broadcast timestamps. The UK retained 12-hour for domestic BBC schedules but switched 24-hour for rail (1995). The US remains the largest holdout: civilian 12-hour, military/medical/aviation 24-hour, with hybrid digital displays in cars and microwaves.

“I process 1,200 timecards per cycle. Half the supervisors enter 24-hour, half enter 12-hour AM/PM. The twin clock face shows me both at once and the side-by-side instantly cross-checks shift entries. Saved me three audit findings last quarter.”
“1430Z briefings are sacred; civilian visitors keep asking what 2330 means. This tool's twin face is now bookmarked at the front-gate orientation kiosk. The NATO STANAG 1071 reference in the FAQ is correct and rarely seen elsewhere.”
“Parents text me 'pickup at 17:00?' and I have to translate to 5 PM in my head while running drills. The preset for 17:00 → 5:00 PM is on my home screen. Clean SVG, no jank on mobile.”
“Indian guests use 24-hour, US guests use AM/PM. Mumbai 14:00 = Atlanta 4:30 AM = London 9:30. Twin face + preset chips for common ceremony times keeps me on schedule across nine timezones.”
