Decimal Hours to Hours & Minutes Converter

To convert decimal hours to HH:MM, take the integer part as whole hours and multiply the decimal part by 60 to get minutes. So 2.5 hours = 2h 30m and 1.75 hours = 1h 45m. This tool renders the value on a real clock face with a highlighted pie slice showing the fractional-minute portion.

Formula

hours = floor(decimal); minutes = round((decimal − hours) × 60)

Worked: decimal = 2.5. hours = floor(2.5) = 2. minutes = round((2.5 − 2) × 60) = round(30) = 30. Result: 2h 30m. Pie slice highlights 0.5 of the dial (half the hour).

How to Use the Pie-Slice Clock

  1. Enter a decimal hour value (e.g., 7.25 for 7 hours 15 minutes) in the input or use the slider.
  2. Watch the pie slice fill — the highlighted wedge represents the fractional minutes (0.25 = quarter of the hour).
  3. Read the decomposition in the H, M, S cards — the integer hours and computed minutes appear instantly.
  4. Confirm the HH:MM:SS string — payroll and time-clock systems expect this format for export.
  5. Save the conversion with one click for repeat overtime calculations or billing entries.

Why Decimal Hours Exist — A Workplace History

In 2026, a payroll clerk processing 1,800 weekly timecards for a fast-casual chain cannot multiply "7 hours 23 minutes" by $18.50/hour without first converting to 7.383 decimal hours. The decimal-hour notation is the bridge between human shift readings (HH:MM) and the multiplication-friendly math of wage calculation. This tool exists so you don't have to do the conversion by mental arithmetic.

The mechanical clock of 14th-century Europe baked the 60-minute hour into civil life — a Babylonian sexagesimal inheritance via Greek astronomy. The Wells Cathedral clock (1392, England) and Strasbourg astronomical clock (1574) both run on 60-base division. Decimal time was never natively a clock format; it's a payroll abstraction layered on top of sexagesimal hours.

French Revolutionary decimal time (1793-1795) tried to redefine the day as 10 decimal hours × 100 decimal minutes × 100 decimal seconds. A "decimal hour" was 2.4 modern hours, not a fractional one. The National Convention abandoned the scheme in 18 months — pocket-watch makers refused to retool. Today's "decimal hours" have nothing to do with that experiment; they're fractional 60-minute hours expressed as base-10 numbers for computation.

NIST timekeeping via WWVB (Fort Collins, 60 kHz LF radio) broadcasts UTC in HH:MM:SS but exports analytical data in decimal-second seconds. NASA Goddard's Mission Operations Control Center logs in decimal hours for mission-elapsed time (MET). Aviation Hobbs meters tick in 0.1-hour (6-minute) decimal increments — Cessna, Piper, Cirrus, and turbine aircraft all use them. Aviation maintenance intervals (Annual, 100-hr inspection) are tracked in decimal hours per FAR Part 91.

ISO 8601:2019 formally allows decimal fractions in time notation: T15.5 means 3:30 PM (15 hours + 0.5 = 30 min). Most database engines and parsers strip the fraction and re-display as HH:MM. ISO recommends the colon form for human consumption and decimal for machine calculation — exactly the round-trip this tool performs.

Military and aviation (per NATO STANAG 1071) use HHMM for ATC clearances but exporting flight logbooks to decimal hours for FAA Part 61.51 logging. The Cessna 172 POH lists fuel burn as "8.5 gph at cruise" — implicitly a per-decimal-hour rate. Sailing logs (USCG OUPV license) require decimal hours of underway time. Hospitals and ICU charts use both: real-time charting in HH:MM, nursing-overtime claims in decimal hours.

EU 1985 24-hour adoption didn't replace decimal-hour billing — French CPAs and German Steuerberater still bill in decimal-hour blocks (0.1 h or 0.25 h tarif minimum). The UK's HMRC permits decimal-hour timesheets for IR35 contractor reporting. US legal practice management software (Clio, MyCase, PracticePanther) defaults to 0.1-hour decimal billing increments.

I run 2400 weekly timecards across 14 restaurants. The pie-slice fractional minutes view is exactly what I needed to coach line cooks on entering 7.25 vs 7.5. The IRS FLSA-rounding FAQ saved an audit.

Aircraft Hobbs meter ticks in decimal hours (0.1 = 6 min). My logbook needs both HH:MM for ATC and decimal for billing. This tool flips both ways without me thinking. Aviation Hobbs meter FAQ was spot-on.

Practice schedule is 1.5h drills + 0.5h scrimmage. Parents text 'pickup at 4:45 or 4.75?' Both. The slider feels intuitive on phone and the slice viz is visually pleasing.

Vendor invoices come in decimal hours (the band is 4.5 h) and venue contracts in HH:MM (ballroom 5h 30m). This tool's preset chips for common event durations (cocktail = 1h, dinner = 2h) live on my home screen.
