A Brief History of National Holidays
In 2026, an HR director at Equinor administering payroll across US, UK, India and Canada operations needs a single filterable source for statutory holidays in all four jurisdictions. This calendar is that source. It draws from 5 USC 6103 (the US Code section defining federal holidays), the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 (UK), the Government of India Ministry of Home Affairs gazette, and the Canada Labour Code.
The US federal-holiday list grew over more than a century. Washington's Birthday became a federal holiday in 1879 (renamed Presidents Day in popular usage after the 1971 Uniform Monday Holiday Act). Memorial Day was federalized in 1971. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was added in 1986. The most recent addition is Juneteenth (June 19), made federal by the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, signed by President Biden June 17, 2021. The full count is now 11.
UK bank holidays trace to the Bank Holidays Act 1871 (Sir John Lubbock, Liberal MP), which originally designated Easter Monday, Whit Monday, the first Monday in August and Boxing Day as days when banks could legally suspend trade. The 1971 Banking and Financial Dealings Act replaced and extended that — modern bank holidays differ between England/Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Scotland uniquely observes St Andrew's Day (Nov 30, gazetted 2006), and Northern Ireland adds the Battle of the Boyne (Jul 12) and St Patrick's Day (Mar 17).
India's national-holiday list is short and political: Republic Day (Jan 26, commemorating the 1950 adoption of the Indian Constitution), Independence Day (Aug 15, 1947 from British rule) and Gandhi Jayanti (Oct 2, Gandhi's birthday). The Government of India also gazettes a separate list of "restricted holidays" — religious observances that vary state-by-state, including Diwali, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Christmas, Good Friday, Maha Shivaratri, Janmashtami and Guru Nanak Jayanti.
Canada's federal statutory holidays are defined in the Canada Labour Code, Part III. The list includes New Year's Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day (Mon before May 25), Canada Day (Jul 1), Civic Holiday (Aug, some provinces), Labour Day (1st Mon Sep), Truth & Reconciliation Day (Sep 30 — added 2021 after the residential-school discoveries), Thanksgiving (Canada — 2nd Mon Oct), Remembrance Day (Nov 11), Christmas (Dec 25). Provinces add their own (Family Day in Feb in Alberta/Saskatchewan/Ontario, etc.).
Easter Sunday — observed across all four countries — uses the Computus algorithm fixed at the First Council of Nicaea (325 CE): the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon (the ecclesiastical full moon falling on or after March 21). 2025 = April 20; 2026 = April 5; 2027 = March 28 (unusually early because the Paschal full moon is Wed Mar 24). Eastern Orthodox churches use the Julian calendar version of the same algorithm, producing a typically-later date.
