Why Monochrome Print?
@media print { backgrounds = white; borders = black }CSS @media print queries override on-screen colors with high-contrast monochrome. ANSI/ISO printer standards specify a minimum contrast ratio of 3:1 for legibility — our print style targets 7:1+ (WCAG AAA). Recommended printer settings: 600 dpi, 100% scale, no "background graphics".

A Brief History of Printable Calendars
In 2026, the office manager at Maersk Copenhagen needs a 12-month wall calendar that shows UK bank holidays and Indian gazetted holidays side-by-side, ready to pin above the printer station for an international staff. This page produces that artifact in one click — and unlike paid wall calendars, it updates every year with one number change.
Printable calendars predate digital screens by centuries. The earliest surviving printed calendar is the Mainz Psalter (1457, Fust & Schöffer) which included a printed monthly grid for the canonical hours. The 1480s saw mass-produced almanac wall sheets in German lands; by the 1600s a Dutch wall calendar (thealmanak) was standard in every merchant's counting house.
The Gregorian reform (Pope Gregory XIII, October 1582) standardized the 12-month structure and the leap-year rule (every 4 years, except century years not divisible by 400). The structure has survived unchanged through the French Revolutionary calendar (Year I, 1792, replaced by Napoleon in 1806), the Soviet five-day Nepreryvka week (1929-1940), and the World Calendar movement of the 1930s.
The 3×4 grid layout — 4 rows of 3 months each — became the dominant wall-calendar format in the 1940s commercial printing boom. Wartime conservation of paper drove the compact format. The 12×1 horizontal strip layout was popularized by IBM in the 1960s for desk-side reference next to mainframe consoles.
CSS @media print queries (introduced in CSS2, 1998, fully supported by 2001) made HTML-to-PDF a one-click workflow. Modern browsers honor @page margins, page-break-before/after, and orphan/widow controls, allowing a single HTML document to print as cleanly as a typeset book. The calendar above uses these features to deliver a print-ready PDF without any server-side rendering.
ISO 216 (1975) defines the A-series paper sizes — A4 = 210 × 297 mm. A4 fits exactly two A5 sheets and tiles cleanly across a wall. The North American Letter format (216 × 279 mm) is geometrically similar but slightly wider and shorter. Both work for the 3×4 grid layout; A4 portrait is the default.

“Our open-plan office pinned the strip-12 layout above the printer station. International staff cross-reference UK and India holidays at a glance. Best free wall calendar I've sourced.”
“I print the grid-3x4 for every classroom in early September. UK toggle gives me bank holidays; US toggle covers our Boston exchange dates. The Ctrl-P flow is bulletproof.”
“We print quarterly schedules. Toggling India + UK holidays simultaneously was exactly what we needed for South-Asia / Europe cargo planning. PDF download saves time.”
“I print one of these for the start of each academic year and pin it next to my office whiteboard. The clean monochrome print survives a year of coffee splashes. Recommended.”
