This tool gets better every time someone says what confused them.

Sow the next crop into the standing previous crop before harvest so the two overlap — and get the sow and harvest dates, total cycle days and the days you save.

What this means
Relay cropping sows the second crop into the standing first crop rather than waiting for a clean field. By overlapping the two by 20 days, the total land-occupation cycle shrinks from 220 days (sequential) to 200 days — saving 20 days and squeezing more harvests into the same season.

Next: sow crop 2 on Sep 9, 2026 — ~20 days before crop 1 is cleared — so the standing crop 1 shelters the young crop 2 and you bank 20 days.

Relay overlap works best when crop 1 is nearing maturity and tolerates a companion at its base; ensure moisture and nutrients support both during the overlap window.

Pass the baton before the first crop comes off

Relay cropping borrows from the relay race: instead of waiting for one crop to finish before starting the next, you sow the second crop into the standing first crop a little before harvest. Wheat goes into standing cotton, sugarcane into wheat, lentil broadcast into ripening rice — the second crop establishes on residual moisture under the shelter of the first, and is already growing when that crop is cut. The two overlap, and the calendar shortens.

This tool lays out the whole sequence — first harvest date, second sow date, second harvest date, total cycle days and the days saved — from your sow date, the two durations and the overlap you plan. Use it to fit an extra crop into a tight season and to time the relay sowing precisely. Pair it with the Succession Planting, Crop Rotation and Cropping Intensity tools for a complete cropping plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is relay cropping?+

Relay cropping sows the next crop into the standing previous crop before that first crop is harvested, so the two overlap on the same land for a period. Like a relay race where the baton is passed before the first runner stops, the second crop is already growing when the first comes off — shortening the overall calendar and squeezing more crops into a season.

How is the relay schedule calculated?+

From your first crop's sowing date and duration the tool finds the first harvest date. The second crop is sown a set number of overlap days before that harvest, so its sow date falls inside the standing first crop. Adding the second crop's duration gives its harvest date, and the span from first sow to second harvest is the total cycle — minus the overlap, which is the days saved.

How is relay cropping different from intercropping?+

Intercropping grows two crops together for most of their lives, side by side in the same field. Relay cropping is staggered in time: the second crop is introduced only near the end of the first crop's life and largely grows after it. The overlap in relay is short and deliberate — just enough to get a head start without the two competing heavily.

What are common relay-cropping examples?+

Wheat relayed into standing cotton, sugarcane relayed into wheat, lentil or lathyrus broadcast into standing rice (paira/utera cropping), and berseem relayed into wheat. The idea is always the same — establish the next crop using residual moisture and the shelter of the standing crop so it is well grown by the time that crop is harvested.

Why does relay cropping save days?+

Because the second crop's establishment phase happens inside the first crop's standing period instead of after it. Those overlap days would otherwise be lost to land preparation and a fresh sowing. By passing the baton early you compress the calendar, often enough to fit an extra crop or to dodge a tight seasonal window.

What is utera or paira cropping?+

Utera (paira) cropping is a traditional relay method where seed of a pulse such as lentil, lathyrus or pea is broadcast into a standing rice crop a week or two before harvest, using the leftover field moisture. The pulse germinates under the rice and grows on after harvest, giving a second crop with almost no extra land preparation.

Does the overlap risk competition or damage?+

A short, well-timed overlap usually helps the second crop more than the first crop suffers, but too long an overlap can shade the young crop or make harvest of the first crop awkward and damaging to seedlings. Keep the overlap to the window the species tolerate, and harvest the first crop carefully to protect the establishing relay crop.

Can I use this for any two crops?+

Yes — enter any first crop sow date and duration, the overlap days you plan, and the second crop's duration. It works for cereal-into-cereal, pulse-into-cereal, fodder relays and more. The dates are guidance; match the overlap to what each crop pair actually tolerates in your climate.

Are the dates exact?+

They are solid planning dates. Real crop durations shift with variety, sowing depth, temperature and moisture, and harvest may move a few days either way. Use the schedule to set up your rotation and overlap, then adjust on the ground as the crops actually develop.
